Job Description Summary
The Lead Violence Recovery Specialist (VRS) will provide supervision, leadership, and direct patient care within the Penn Trauma Violence Recovery Program (PTVRP). Founded in 2021, PTVRP is a hospital-based violence intervention program that provides individualized support to survivors of violent injury treated at Penn. PTVRP provides psychosocial support and peer mentoring combined with service navigation to help survivors of violence achieve holistic healing.

The Lead VRS will have two related roles. First, the Lead VRS will provide direct services to a caseload of program participants. This involves meeting patients at bedside in the hospital or soon after discharge, presenting the program, and obtaining consent to participate from those who are interested. Safety planning and basic needs assessment are the first steps. The Lead VRS will then provide trauma-informed support and conduct individualized goal-setting. Goals may include relocation, obtaining mental health care, or reentering school, among others. The Lead VRS then provides the referrals, support, and coordination necessary to achieve these goals over a period of 3-6 months.

The Violence Recovery Specialist (VRS) will provide trauma-informed peer mentorship for violently injured individuals treated at Penn Trauma through the Penn Trauma Violence Recovery Program. The VRS will provide peer mentorship to enrolled patients, working with them to identify needs and personal and community risk factors for recurrent violent involvement. The VRS will collaborate with community partner agencies to provide resources and support for needs and risk factors identified. Although individual needs will vary, topics will include psychological, social and system issues of trauma recovery, life goal setting, behavioral change, and increasing connections to school, family, social supports, and social services. The VRS will provide assistance in navigating medical, legal and financial issues related to the patient's injury.

The VRS will engage with clients via office, phone, and home visits and will collaborate with a broad interdisciplinary team at Penn Trauma, including Violence Recovery Program mental health providers. The VRS will maintain records and documentation in compliance with HIPAA regulations and program requirements. They will maintain communication and collegial relationships with hospital staff and community partner agencies. VRS will establish new partnerships with community organizations with the goal of increasing support services available for enrolled patients.

The Lead VRS will also serve as the on-the-scene supervisor to 3 additional VRS team members. The Lead VRS will provide training and supervision in trauma informed care, health system and service navigation, and program documentation. The Lead VRS will coordinate VRS schedules and case loads to achieve optimal workload distribution. In this capacity, the Lead VRS will liaise with various clinical departments including social work and the trauma clinical team. The Lead VRS will also connect with the Penn Community Violence Intervention Outreach team to coordinate community-based services. The Lead VRS will represent PTVRP in the city-wide coalition of hospital-based violence intervention programs.

The VIS will assist with Trauma Prevention and Outreach Program community outreach activities and promote program visibility in the community. Additionally, the VRS will assist the Injury Prevention Coordinator in maintain ongoing communication with local law enforcement and community agencies involved with violence intervention and prevention. As part of the Violence Recovery Program, the VRS will coordinate with the Penn Community Violence Intervention Outreach team.

This position is contingent upon continued grant funding.
