Pay Range

$104,220 - $134,976 Annually for the 338.1 Level

$126,120 - $163,344 Annually for the 339.2 Level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We're looking for a Laser Safety Officer to provide comprehensive support for work activities involving our world class laser program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This position will be assigned to the Laser and Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Office within the Safety Engineering Functional Area (SEFA) and will provide technical expertise and support to multiple clients as an integral member of the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Associate Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Work with scientists, engineers, technicians, and other safety professionals to ensure that laser safety controls are appropriately implemented in new and existing operations.
  • Provide advanced technical and administrative oversight for laser safety requirements within Integrated Safety Management (ISM) and ES&H programs.
  • Review lasers, laser systems and associated work activities for ANSI Z136 and LLNL policy compliance and effectiveness.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of project and organizational goals while working under limited direction within the scope of assignment.
  • Use independent judgment to develop approaches to solutions that require in-depth analysis.
  • Create and optimize laser safety programmatic documents and procedures.
  • Provide advanced guidance and support for complex to highly complex, technical problems and long-term projects within dynamic operational structure and facility.
  • Stay apprised of regulations and DOE requirements and review their potential impacts to LLNL.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 339.2 level

  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and high-level technical personnel to provide highly advanced technical and/or technical management support in the areas of engineering technology or applied sciences. Where advanced technical knowledge in one or more engineering discipline or field of applied science is required, may conduct research to find solutions to engineering problems.
  • Development and refinement of technical systems, operations, or maintenance strategies. In addition, design data analysis, documentation, and modification of highly complex prototype or specialized electronic, mechanical or software systems may be required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, technology, safety, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
  • Experience and comprehensive knowledge of coherent (laser) and incoherent electromagnetic radiation, including ultraviolet, visible, and infrared.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of applicable safety rules and regulations, and the ability to apply standards and professional judgement in a variety of work environments and applications.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain moderately complex technical or operational information.
  • Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to evaluate, interpret, negotiate, recommend, and implement actions and solutions for moderately complex problems.
  • Effective organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple moderately complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
  • Experience working independently and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing complex projects, and meeting schedules.

Additional qualifications at the 339.2 level

  • Ability to mentor others in specific on-the-job training, with advanced technical skills specific to assignment, may also include administrative and technical leadership skills.
  • Highly advanced skills and understanding of relevant technologies and processes, including the ability in laser technology theory to design complex systems and solutions.
  • Highly advanced written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills in multiple technical areas.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Certification by a recognized accrediting organization, e.g., Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO), Certified Safety Professionals (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Health Physicist (CHP).

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
