Udder Health Systems is primarily a bovine diagnostics laboratory that serves dairymen across America to ensure quality milk for their herds. In addition to the milk quality work, we are proud to offer food safety testing at our Jerome location and produce scientific media at our Meridian location that is shipped to customers internationally.

The Laboratory Researcher, in coordination with the Laboratory Director and President, is responsible for completing tasks related to R&D in every facet of the business, with a special emphasis on PCR and other molecular methods.

Duties + Responsibilities

  • Operational Efficiency
  • Perform Milk Lab Analyst duties + Responsibilities
  • R&D Initiatives
  • Under direction of the President/Laboratory Director, participate in R&D activities for new products and serves, per Market need/demand
  • Training
  • Train laboratory staff on new PCR techniques or other molecular methods
  • Documentation
  • Maintain accurate inventory of PCR kits and related supplies; monitor inventory to ensure no service disruption or outage across all laboratories and customers
  • Maintain current SOPs to document kit use, kit creation, training documents related to kit creation, and testing processes and procedures
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Attend community events or other business development/marketing activities to represent UHS
  • Pursue continued education opportunities, as provided by UHS
  • Teamwork and Communication
  • Assist laboratory during times of heavy workload, including set-up, racking, preparing, testing, and reading
  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork and communication with co-workers

Job Specifications:

  • Preference of a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences with micro- and molecular biology lab experience, or equivalent experience
  • Preference of 3-5 years previous laboratory experience as a lab analyst
  • Preference of at least three years’ customer service experience

Knowledge, Skills, + Abilities:

  • Must be a self-starter and able work without close supervision
  • Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to write and follow detailed instructions and processes
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of products and have an ability to learn and use proprietary software systems
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally, and in writing

Work Environment + Physical Demands

  • This position is in a laboratory setting, generally indoors, subject to air conditioning and heating, working with live cultures and chemicals
  • May work with various chemicals, nearly all considered non-hazardous, though may bring in a hazardous chemical on occasion, if participating in a research project
  • Position requires sufficient vision to read micro-organisms on plates, view computers, etc.
  • Position requires sufficient hearing to respond to alerts on machines; noise levels in labs are generally low
  • Must have dexterity of the hands to sufficiently plate and pipette samples, type, and carry and hold items
  • May occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
  • Position is largely sedentary but may require some standing at the bench, while conducting microbiological tests; tall stools provided

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel may be required for training or meetings , in addition to local travel to customer locations. Travel may occur in a company-provided vehicle.

Position Information:

  • This position is generally 40 hours per week. Schedule will include rotational weekend work. Overtime may be necessary on occasion.
