The Industrial Maintenance Technology ( INT) department in the Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences (EMPS) division is looking for a Laboratory Specialist. The Laboratory Specialist will be under the supervision of the Department Chair(s) and will be taking direction from Chair(s) and faculty.

Responsibilities will set-up, maintenance, and repair; working with students; assisting with academic lab prep; and other duties as assigned. This position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds), walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and climbing a six foot ladder. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to read technical manuals in English and to be able to speak with equipment technicians and follow orders in order to repair equipment. The employee will be housed at the Advanced Technology Center.

Required Qualification
1. High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of three (3) years of recent Industrial Maintenance experience or related experience. OR an Associate’s degree, certificate or equivalent training and/or course work and one (1) year experience in Industrial Maintenance or related field.

2. Experience with Industrial Technology equipment utilization, basic maintenance, and repair.

3. Ability to lift up to 30lbs.

4. Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Desired Qualifications
1. Associate’s degree.

2. Experience repairing laboratory or shop equipment.

3. Experience developing and executing lab safety protocols.

4. Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Summary of Essential Functions
Department Operations – 85%
  • Assist Industrial Technology instructors with overseeing overall operation, maintenance, organization, supplies, and safety of the Industrial Technology lab.
  • Work with faculty members on new initiatives, including safety certifications, equipment certifications, and equipment recommendations.
  • Serve as a facilitator in outreach events to public and K-12 students as directed.
  • Assist with lab setup, breakdown, and clean-up activities related to academic coursework.
  • Assist faculty in documenting lab operations, certification procedures, safety procedures, etc.
  • Assisting the faculty in reviewing the completion of student course requirements and/or outcomes
  • Support and assist students during classroom/laboratory sessions
  • Assist faculty in proctoring lab assignments or assessments.
  • Assist faculty and Advanced Technology Center staff with special projects and grant-funded programs as needed.
  • Report damage and monitor all repairs
  • Repair equipment as appropriate
  • Assemble/disassemble equipment

Student Customer Service - 10%
  • Serve as a public face for the Industrial Technology department and Advanced Technology Center, including giving tours, performing demonstrations for students, faculty, and the community at special college events.
Other – 5%
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the ATC Director, Dean, Associate Dean, Chair(s) or designee.
