Job Description:
KALU Radio Station Manager oversees all functions and operations of KALU-89.3 FM Radio Station while reporting to the Chair of the Communication Department. S/he also serves as a faculty member within that department. As station manager, s/he is responsible for all aspects of station management (including, but not limited to, operations, production, content, budgeting, and personnel).


As faculty, s/he will have a course load of 18 hours per academic year (Fall semester, 9 hours; Spring semester, 9 hours) and serve as the internship coordinator for the Summer semester. Courses taught will consist primarily of: Radio (Audio) Production, Announcing I and II, Station Participation (Rules and Experience), Journalism Practicum (Radio), Podcasting, and other courses as assigned.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Hire, Train and Manage all radio station personnel, including student workers and volunteers.

  • Oversee all station operations.
  • Comply with all Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Rules and Regulations as a licensed FM radio station.
  • Coordinate engineers and other contractors as needed for station maintenance and upgrades.
  • Create and maintain schedule for all station programming.
  • Nurture collaborations with the institution and the community at-large.
  • Assume the role of faculty by teaching, evaluating, mentoring and supervising students.
  • Provide updates, as needed, concerning station developments
  • Create and maintain a station budget; to include, but not limited to, personnel, equipment, supplies, engineering fees/contracts.
  • Advise students (Broadcast Journalism majors) as needed.
  • Foster and sustain relationships with professional organizations (e.g., National
  • Association of Broadcasters, Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association)
  • Assist students with station-related projects as needed for content.
  • Sustain professional activity in the field.
  • Generate a vision for the future of the radio station that will enable it to remain competitive with other programs and relevant to the field.

Position Qualifications:


Qualifications:


The successful candidate will have a minimum of (1) a Master of Arts degree in Broadcasting, Mass Communications, Media Production, Journalism, or a related field, and (2) a minimum of three years of experience in a radio station, ideally in a managerial capacity. In addition, teaching experience with first generation college students will be a plus.


As a land-grant institution and an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), our clientele consists of primarily first-generation college students. Therefore, our faculty are committed to innovative teaching methods that are designed to enhance student retention.
