The System Administrator is responsible for setting up and maintaining a system or specific components of a system (e.g. for example, installing, configuring, and updating hardware and software; establishing and managing user accounts; overseeing or conducting backup and recovery tasks; implementing operational and technical security controls; and adhering to organizational security policies and procedures).

Essential Duties/Functions:
  • Installs, implements, configures, patches, maintains and troubleshoots the on-premises Windows Server and Linux server Virtual Machines
  • Manages on-premises Active Directory and vendor application accounts, network rights, and access to systems and equipment
  • Configures, patches, and maintains the VMware vCenter/vSphere environment, including the server hardware
  • Troubleshoots and maintains all equipment in the on-premises server room, including all rack-mounted hardware
  • Installs, patches, and troubleshoots the 3rd party vendor applications used by the other Information Technology team members
  • Installs, configures, patches, and maintains the Microsoft SQL Server databases used by vendor application servers
  • Works closely with vendors on system and software deployments
  • Works closely with the Technical Writer to maintain a knowledge base of system standard operating procedures.
  • Responds to major zero-day exploits in the wild as appropriate
  • Serves as subject matter expert (SME) on hardware systems, virtual machines, operating systems (Windows and Linux), VMware, SQL servers, remote support, and printers
  • Maintains the Veeam backups for VMs and Office 365 user data, including tape drive rotation and disaster-recovery (D/R) policy
  • Designs on-prem Group Policy Objects to ensure compatibility with organizational standards, business rules, and needs
  • Plans, executes, and verifies data redundancy and system recovery procedures
  • Provides ongoing optimization and problem-solving support
  • Checks system hardware availability, functionality, integrity, and efficiency
  • Conducts periodic system maintenance including cleaning (both physically and electronically), disk checks, routine reboots, data dumps, and testing
  • Manages system/server resources including performance, capacity, availability, serviceability, and recoverability

Qualifications

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED, required
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, software engineering, information systems, or computer engineering, preferred
  • Annual 40 hours of continuous learning, (may include professional memberships, forums, lunch and learns, roundtables, online training courses, and maintaining certifications), required

Experience:
  • Three (3) or more years of relevant experience or combined education, required

License/Certifications:
  • Certifications addressing network infrastructure, mobile device integration, hardware evaluation, operating systems, technical support, managing, maintaining, troubleshooting, installing, configuring basic network infrastructure, authentication, security testing, intrusion detection/prevention, incident response and recovery, attacks and countermeasures, cryptography, malicious code countermeasures, and desktop hardware, software, and configurations – preferred

Software:
  • Configuring and utilizing software-based computer protection tools (e.g., software firewalls, antivirus software, anti-spyware), preferred
  • Familiarity with Microsoft, VMware, and Red Hat licensing, preferred
  • Familiarity with VMware ESXi as the baremetal operating system on virtualization hardware, preferred
  • Using virtual machines. (e.g., Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Citrix XenDesktop/Server, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, etc.), preferred

Other Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of FedRAMP, NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-171, NIST CSF, Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), ISO 27000
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, and ethics as they relate to cybersecurity and privacy.
  • Information technology (IT) security principles and methods (e.g., firewalls, demilitarized zones, encryption).
  • Performance tuning tools and techniques.
- Server and client operating systems. - Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 and newer.
  • Familiarity with Linux. Primarily Red Hat Enterprise or comparable RPM-based distros (e.g. CentOS, Oracle, Fedora, SuSE).
  • Familiarity with server clustering, including Microsoft Network Load Balancing (NLB), VMware clusters and general High-Availability (HA) concepts.
  • Familiarity with installing, configuring, and updating Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and other databases as part of vendor applications.
  • Familiarity with disaster/recovery policy (e.g. Veeam or other backup suites, tape media, and D/R sites).
  • Familiarity with VM backup recovery via VMware snapshots and/or Veeam Backup Suite restoration preferred.
  • Familiarity with Windows and Linux file systems, partitioning and encryption (e.g. Bitlocker, SecureBoot, SELinux, etc).
  • Familiarity with VMware vSphere and vCenter virtualization hypervisor.
  • Understands organizational information technology (IT) user security policies (e.g., account creation, password rules, access control).
  • Familiar with operating system command-line tools. – Primarily Windows batch scripting, PowerShell, and Linux (BASH) command-line.
  • Principles and methods for integrating system components.
  • Capable of configuring and optimizing 3rd-party software.
  • Capable of maintaining on-premises directory services. (e.g., Microsoft Active Directory).
  • Skilled in interacting with customers
  • Skilled in conducting system/server planning, management, and maintenance
  • Ability to correct physical and technical problems that impact system/server performance
  • Skilled in troubleshooting failed system components (i.e., servers)
  • Capable of identifying and anticipating system/server performance, availability, capacity, or configuration problems
  • Skilled in installing system and component upgrades. (i.e., servers, appliances, network devices)
  • Capable of monitoring and optimizing system/server performance
  • Capable of recovering failed systems/servers. (e.g., recovery software, failover clusters, replication, etc.)
