Position Summary

This position is for an Intellectual Property Paralegal who will also support Corporate Legal. The role is primarily to support the development and maintenance of the PGS patent and trademark portfolios worldwide including the electronic files and database used to track those portfolios. In particular, this role will require experience and proficiency with the use of docketing software to create and track events and deadlines related to patent and trademark prosecution. The IP Paralegal may also perform related functions including report generation, invoice processing and related record keeping, patent annuity payment administration, and administration of the PGS patent incentive program. The candidate must be self-motivated, have a positive attitude, and have common sense.

Main Tasks

  • Using a Web-based software system to create and track events and deadlines related to worldwide patent and trademark prosecution, as well as uploading documents for storage in the software system.
  • Managing correspondence to and from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office and international law firms.
  • Generating docket reports and other reports using the database.
  • Preparing, obtaining and/or generating documents for filing with patent offices, Administering patent and trademark annuity payments, Administering the PGS patent incentive program, Processing invoices, Maintaining the PGS deposit account at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • The main Corporate Paralegal tasks are: assisting with reviewing, drafting, commenting on legal documents.
  • Assisting with insurance policy renewals.
  • Assisting with Office Emergency Response Plans.
  • Assist renewing annual reports for companies.

Required qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency using docketing software to create and track events and deadlines related to worldwide patent and trademark prosecution.
  • Detailed understanding of the legal steps and deadlines involved in obtaining granted patents and trademark registrations in the United States and other countries and in maintaining those patents and registrations in force.
  • Able to identify key documents used in each step, to generally understand the purpose of each document, and to generate certain of these documents when necessary.
  • Able to make filings of patent applications and other documents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • General understanding of treaties used to accomplish international patent application filings, and ability to accomplish these international patent filings by corresponding with law firms in various countries.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and typing.

Preferred qualifications

  • 3+ years experience as inhouse or law firm IP paralegal
  • Experience with international patent portfolios
