Incumbent is responsible for the food service operation at the Yakama Nation Correctional Facility. Plans daily menus and prepares meals for inmates. Supervises kitchen aides and assigned trustees. Maintains records and logs relative to kitchen operations. Ensures sanitation standards are maintained.


Examples of Work Performed:

  • Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Public Safety organizational chart and established chain of command.
  • Responsible to supervise kitchen operations and meal preparation on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Plans and prepares daily meals for inmates. Prepares sack lunches for inmates authorized for work release.
  • Cleans and inspects kitchen equipment, appliances, and work areas on a regular basis to ensure cleanliness and functional operation.
  • Prepare written requests to immediate supervisor for repairs or replacement of equipment and appliances when needed.
  • Cleans, cuts, and cooks meat, fish, and poultry.
  • Maintain an inventory of all food supplies and kitchen equipment. Submit written requests for purchase of food items and kitchen supplies.
  • Maintain records on food cost, inmate meal count, and total number of meals served.
  • Serves all meals individually and places them on a cart for distribution.
  • Wash pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and other cooking equipment.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines outlined in the YN Correctional Facility Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Ensures Federal guidelines for institutional food service and hygiene are followed.
  • As directed, prepares meals for officers working special duty assignments and events such as powwows, parades, concerts, marijuana eradication, search & rescue, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of techniques and equipment used in preparation, cooking, and serving of food items.
  • Knowledge of basic procurement principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and equipment used in food preparation and service.
  • Knowledge of health and safety principles and practices involved in food preparation and service.
  • Knowledge, in general, of maintaining inventory, records, and logs on food, supplies, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic food values and nutrition.
  • Skill in handling and preparing food utilizing healthy and safe techniques.
  • Skill in operating assorted kitchen equipment.
  • Skill in menu planning.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule when necessary.
  • Ability to maintain a budget and be thrifty while ensuring adequate food supplies are kept on hand.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years of work experience in a comparable position.
  • Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Required to successfully complete mandatory training for Food Service Certification within 6-months of hire.
  • Must possess a current Food Handler's Card.
  • Must possess and maintain a current first aid/CPR card or obtain one within 6-months of hire.
  • Required to wear a department uniform.
  • Required to take an annual physical to certify physical fitness.
  • Requires working irregular hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Requires attending and successfully completing mandatory training.
  • Required to sign a code of conduct and understand sanctions for misconduct.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST
: Is required for Pre-Employment with the Yakama Nation. During employment, tribal employees are also subject to random testing (YN Personnel Policy Manual, Chapter 2.9.6, Section (a), (g), Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Policy).


TRAINEE
: The Yakama Nation reserves the right to practice Indian Preference by selecting an Indian applicant as a trainee at a reduced pay rate than announced. A training plan is developed to assist employee to reach required qualification requirements and performance level. After completing training plan, work performance will be evaluated. Upon satisfying qualification requirements, employee will obtain entry level pay.


INDIAN PREFERENCE
: In efforts to practice Self-Determination, the Yakama Nation grants Indian Preference for employment, promotions, and transfers to its employees and qualified applicants as appropriate. This may limit career opportunities for non-Indian applicants and candidates.


Preference for employment will be granted to qualified individuals meeting minimal qualification criteria in the following order pursuant to the YN Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.3:

  • 10-points= Enrolled member of Yakama Nation.
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 6-points= Other Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) descendant of enrolled Yakama member.
  • 2-points= Non-Indian spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 0-points= Non-Indian.

Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.4:

  • Positions funded under non-638 federal funding: 8-points= Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).


VETERAN PREFERENCE
: Is pursuant to Section 402 of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974. For verification, must provide a copy of honorable DD-214.

Application points using the weighted point factor system: Disabled Veterans receive 10 points; All other Veteran's receive 5 points.


IMMIGRATION
: If selected for employment with the Yakama Nation, you will be required to provide documentation stating you are authorized to work in the United States.
