Service Market Logistics (SML) is part of Volvo Group Trucks Operations (GTO). We are a global organization of 3,750 employees located in over 47 locations in 30 countries. Every day we deliver world-class operational excellence to our customers by applying smart logistics solutions. Our job is to develop, manage, and optimize the Service Market supply chain (aftermarket parts distribution to dealer network) for all Volvo Group brands and joint ventures.

SML NA has 1,200 employees across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Our distribution network consists of one Central Distribution Center and seven Regional Distribution Centers throughout North America.

Position Description

The Health & Safety Specialist I is responsible for safety implementation in Byhalia, MS. The Byhalia CDC is a million square foot facility located approximately 25 miles southeast of Memphis, TN and employs approximately 650 employees. This position reports to the Health and Safety Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist with the implementation of the company safety program (policies, training, procedures, inspections/audits, etc.) for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Responsible for the CDC development of facility-specific procedures that prevent losses, ensures compliance, and reduction of any risk exposures.
  • Develop, publish, and maintain site Safety Policies & Procedures (PPE, Lock-out/Tag-out, Emergency Response, etc.) that reduce exposure to team members and property.
  • Create and deliver training for team members to minimize risk for work-related injuries and positively impact performance.
  • Participate in the plant Safety Committee to ensure maximum involvement of committee members and impact of initiatives.
  • Investigate safety incidents to determine the cause and identify if the incident could have been or can be prevented in the future. Interview team members to learn about work environments and incidents that lead to accidents or injuries. Evaluate the effectiveness of corrections to remedy incidents/accidents.
  • Identify potential hazards by routinely inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment. Make recommendations and provide potential solutions.
  • Effectively partner with vendors and agencies to facilitate inspections and audits for continued improvement.
  • Participate in review and installment of new machinery and equipment or process modifications to ensure all safety requirements are in place.
  • Assist site HS Manager and point of contact for HS issues within area of responsibility. Assist operations management and supervision in understanding applicable regulatory and company standards, directives, guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
Education and/or Work Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or 5 years of equivalent experience
  • OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Certified Preferred
  • Experience in a Union facility is preferred
  • Ability to effectively communicate, empathize, and reason with people in situations that are often sensitive and stressful
  • Good knowledge of related regulatory requirements
  • Ability to take initiative to identify and anticipate client’s needs and make sound recommendations for implementation
  • Comfortable training and educating plant team members and supervisors in safety matters
  • Strong organizational skills, perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly, attention to detail
  • Proficient in the use of computer and software including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Safety certification such as ASP or CSP preferred
