ABOUT THE JOB:
This position is part of the Health Equity Engagement Team within the Covid-19 Recovery Team. The Public Health Educator I will be responsible for equitably disseminating culturally appropriate information to community stakeholders and increasing access to health services by addressing social determinates of health. The Public Health Educator I will be someone who can share real-world experience and empathy,a nd who can cross cultural barriers to form partnerships. In the case of a public health emergency, these positions are expected to participate as members of the emergency response, as needed.
This position is located in Deschutes County and may be eligible for hybrid of in-office/remote work as allowed by policy and approved by the supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support prevention of and recovery from COVID-19 by engaging community members, community organizations, and agencies, particularly serving vulnerable populations.
- Serve as a bridge between communities, healthcare systems and public health to improve health equity.
- Assist in developing equitable programs to implement emergency preparedness and response strategies.
- Perform other tasks as required.
Knowledge of or experience with:
- Direct work with diverse populations.
- Basic knowledge of health and social services available from local providers.
- Basic process facilitation.
- Tracking data.
- Health communication and education.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public, other employees, and community partners.
- Making appropriate referrals consistent with identified needs.
- Educating on public health principles and recommendations in one-on-one or group settings.
- Motivational Interviewing and group facilitation.

$4,673.80 to $6,263.31 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

This is a limited-duration employment position as defined by Deschutes County Code Chapter 3.08.010. The position has identified funding through June 30, 2024. Extending the position beyond June 30, 2024 will depend on a continued business need for the position and approval of additional funding. Should this occur, the County may at a later date extend the position end date or offer regular employment status to the incumbent in this position.
- Associate’s degree in a public health related field;
- AND one (1) year of related experience;
- OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Community Health Worker certification.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish or Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, or other language.
- Lived experience within a vulnerable population in Central Oregon.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended..
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule when necessary, to meet client and department needs.
Driving is a requirement for this position. Must have dependable transportation and be able and willing to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
