General Purpose of Job:
Under the direction and supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the General Mechanic II is responsible for performing unscheduled and scheduled work orders on Hospital’s equipment and utility systems. In the absence of the Plant Operator; conduct daily building rounds/tour and document readings. Possesses general knowledge of all building trades and maintenance procedures related to the operation of the hospital. Ensures efficient operation, inspection and maintenance of the hospital’s essential utility systems and equipment to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and guests.

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Must obtain and maintain the MECH Certification.
  • Uses Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to document all work performed throughout the building.
  • Using Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to comply with PM’s: weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually.
  • Ensures timely and cooperative inter- and intra-departmental relationships and communications throughout the hospital and the system and with individuals external to the hospital and system.
  • Perform maintenance service or repairs in one or more skill areas, including minor plumbing, machine servicing, electrical repairs or installations, or vehicle servicing.
  • Performs tasks such as but not limited to changing light bulbs, installing paper/soap dispenser units, changing filters, changing hardware on doors, minor decorative maintenance and other tasks not requiring a licensed skilled trades person or journeyman.
  • Inspect, repair and install, service and maintain electrical systems including conduit systems, lighting and power circuits, control equipment, switched fans, fixtures, and clocks
  • Cleans and lubricates parts.
  • Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions with management oversight.
  • Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
  • Complies with all company safety and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
  • Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training and hazard assessments.
  • Applies all applicable OSHA and related local safety requirements to all assigned work.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • May perform grounds keeping activities.
  • May be required to assist with special events.
  • Assists skilled trade workers in one or more areas performing specific or standard duties to learn new skills as required for advancement and certification.
  • May be required to utilize basic cleaning and other chemicals.
  • May assist in training, assigning and checking the work of new employees.
  • Examines mechanical equipment to diagnose trouble.
  • Disassembles machines and repairs or replaces broken parts.
  • Adjusts functional parts of mechanical devices as necessary.
  • Inspects completed repairs.
  • May repair and maintain machinery and mechanical equipment, such as motors, pumps, conveyors, belts, fans, air conditioners, etc.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Maintains and repairs buildings, utility systems and equipment as required.
  • Performs such other duties as may be required in order to assure the proper operation of all equipment and utilities as needed in the daily operation of hospital systems.
  • Use color charts, proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Observe and comply with federal, state, and local electric codes; establish and implement prudent safety policies and procedures; observe safety of others and recommend precautionary action if necessary while repairs are in progress.
  • Provide assistance in various other areas of maintenance as required; perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance repair and construction work in the basic trades.
  • Ensures the condition of lighting and power panels are well maintained, that they are clean and properly labeled.
  • Ensure that the panel directories are up to date and that the loads are well balanced. Inspect installations to ensure that electrical safety is maintained, where systems have been altered or improperly worked.
  • Ensure that these systems are returned to compliance with the national electric code.
  • Ability to use test equipment and make calculations for sizing conduit, conductors and over current protection devices. Must know how to size equipment and determine demands under all conditions.
  • Maintain a moderate inventory for day to day operations. Orders parts correctly and keep up with proper paperwork.
  • Ability to communicate well: must be able to follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to interpret and read blueprints, specifications, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve problems quickly and reliably.
  • Ability to provide technical solutions to real time problems.
  • May be required to test emergency generators and record keeping as per standard requirements.
  • Ensures familiarization with requirements specified by TJC/CARF/DOH and other relevant regulatory agencies and organizations.
  • Keep and maintain all emergency lighting such as exit lights and signs including parking lot lighting.
  • Maintain proper operation of transfer switches, generator alarm panels and assure that they are working properly at all times.
  • Is responsible for keeping mechanical and electrical rooms clean at all times.
  • The ability to operate and maintains all physical plant equipment including chillers, boilers, air handlers, air compressors, vacuum pumps, control systems, etc.
  • Works with and monitors outside contractors while they are doing work in the hospital to ensure the work is done in accordance with required standards.
  • Monitors and reports on all project work associated with the facility.
  • May drive a cart and/or drive a company vehicle to pick up supplies and/or drive to offsite properties to complete work request.
  • Must maintain appropriate licensing, credentials and acceptable driving record.
  • Obey traffic laws and safety procedures.
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 2 years related experience and/or hold a MECH Certification.
