FY23 - COUNSELOR, GENERAL – CAREER ACADEMIC PATHWAYS (CAP)

Probationary Tenure-Track D-Basis


Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) is hiring one (1) Tenure-Track, full-time, D-basis (12- month) Counselor, General, Career Academic Pathways (CAP) position to begin July 1, 2023. This assignment will be for 35 hours per week and may require evening and/or weekend hours. The major responsibility for this position will be to provide comprehensive counseling services (academic, career, transfer, vocational and personal) to a diverse and multicultural student population in one of the college's seven CAPs. The seven CAPs are: Arts Media and Design (AMD), Business Entrepreneurship and Law (BEL), Humanities and Communications (HC), Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Social Behavioral Science (SBS), Manufacturing Electronics, Health and Public Service (HPS) and Construction (MEC). All counseling faculty are expected to participate actively in counseling departmental activities as well as the campus community and shared governance of the college. About the College and Department:

LAVC, one of the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), is located in the San Fernando Valley. With an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, LAVC offers a wide range of academic and career technical education programs, and transfers students to leading public and private colleges and universities. The LAVC Counseling Department consists of experienced and professionally trained faculty who work with students concerning educational goals, career planning, transfer to four- year institutions, and other academic and personal issues affecting student success. The department includes counselors who work as general counselors and those who work in programs providing specialized services to targeted groups of students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational counseling, guidance counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students and familiarity with issues related to student equity.

NOTE: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Eligibility Requirements

A medical evaluation indicating fitness to work in the district is required for new employees at the expense of the candidate.

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date. Additional details regarding how to request an exemption, required weekly COVID-19 testing, and mask requirements will be provided by Human Resources for newly hired employees who are unvaccinated.


Major
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive face-to-face and online/e-counseling academic advisement and guidance to a diverse student population, including interpreting the college catalog, schedule of classes and articulation agreements within an assigned CAP.
  • Assist students in choosing and planning immediate and long-range educational goals, including the development of abbreviated and comprehensive student education plans to help students stay on the path to completion.
  • Conduct new student college orientations to familiarize students with college programs and services, student success workshops, and presentations for new and continuing students.
  • Provide career exploration opportunities and promote career decision -making skills.
  • Counsel students, both in groups and individually, who are on probation or subject to dismissal and assist them in creating a plan for success.
  • Evaluate transcripts in collaboration with the Articulation Office.
  • Assist in the development of programs and services to support the Guided Pathways Initiative, LA College Promise, Student Equity, and Basic Skills which promote student success and completion.
  • Collaborate with instructional faculty across disciplines in joint projects designed to increase retention and student success.
  • Participate in the Department Program Review process and evaluation of services.
  • Maintain currency in the discipline, including use of technology, as well as participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, and membership in professional organizations.
  • Represent the department in college decision -making activities related to academic and professional matters by participating in counseling departmental meetings, shared governance committees, and other campus initiatives.
  • Participate in counseling related events and activities, such as Guided Pathways,
  • Graduation Petition Drives, enrollment, and onboarding.
  • Work with Department Chair and counseling colleagues to develop best practices for implementation of new online counseling/advising software and
  • processes.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional growth, innovation and use of best practices in counseling, including but not limited to, activities such as participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, and membership in professional organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Two years of full-time experience within the last five years at a community college or university setting providing academic, career, transfer, vocational and personal counseling to students. A series of part-time experiences that equals to two-years of a full-time assignment may also be used.
  • Knowledge of the transfer process and requirements, articulation agreements, ADT transfer degrees, and computerized transfer resources, such as Assist, CSI- J Mentor, TCW (Transfer Counselor Website).
  • Experience teaching Counseling or Guidance classes.
  • Knowledge of Guided Pathways, Career and Academic Pathways, and Program Mapper.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration as well as with off- campus community and educational partners.
  • Success and commitment as a team player, including the ability to foster collegiality and engage in collaborative problem solving.
  • Knowledge of the current trends in career counseling and career development resources, both printed and online.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, such as development and/or coordination of student services programs and activities, and represent the Counseling Department on campus committees, workgroups, or initiatives.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology tools utilized in providing high quality counseling and teaching, including PeopleSoft, ConexED (Cranium Café, Calibrate, Classrooms), Canvas, PowerPoint, online Counseling, web-based resources, and other technology as tools to create student education plans (SEP) and to enhance services to students. Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak Spanish, Armenian and/or Russian.
  • Familiarity with and/or experience in addressing issues related to student equity.

Salary and Benefits:

The basic salary range is from $86,856 – $131,112 based upon experience and professional preparation. The doctoral differential is $5,016. Benefits include paid holidays, medical, dental and vision care plans, and a $50,000 group life policy.
