GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

This is skilled work that requires extensive electrical and mechanical knowledge in the performance and direction of maintenance, rebuilding, high-voltage testing and environmental regulations of transmission and distribution electrical equipment and related tools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs and directs the receiving of field equipment and ensures the appropriate repairs, rebuilding, or scrapping is completed.
  • Performs and directs the shop and field activities of environmental clean-up and ensures subordinates comply with record-keeping and disposal regulation of state and federal regulations.
  • Performs and directs the welding operations and ensures quality control and safety.
  • Performs and directs the tools and equipment maintenance of line crew and substation personnel.
  • Performs and directs the oil recovery systems insuring quality and adequate supply are maintained.
  • Insures records are maintained for tool control and equipment testing.
  • Participates in work activities, trains employees in skills and procedures to achieve journey level status and provides input on performance reviews.
  • May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Position is designated as Mission Critical.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE) AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma from an accredited school or its equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience as an Apparatus Repairer 1/C or equivalent position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess a valid Class "B" Commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements as required by the department.
  • Must maintain a valid telephone number.
  • May be required to pass and maintain qualification for:
    • Respiratory Protection Physical
    • Pulmonary Function
    • Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Thorough knowledge of methods, tools, equipment and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations related to Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PC1) and hazardous waste.
  • Thorough knowledge of first aid and CPR and ability to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory related to transformers, regulators, and related control systems.
  • Knowledge of all test equipment and procedures related to maintaining personnel safety equipment and bucket trucks.
  • Knowledge and skill in arc, MIG, TIG, and oxygen acetylene welding and cutting procedures.
  • Ability to follow and relay complex instructions, control schedules, and instruct subordinates in all phases of testing and maintenance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees and the public.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to ten (10) pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations.
  • The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards except bright/dim light
  • The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
