Job Summary:

The Fitness Instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly fitness center, and will conduct him or herself in a positive and professional manner, resulting in friendly, convenient and courteous customer service. The Fitness Instructor is committed to providing excellence in service for all members, clients, volunteers and fellow employees. Through the efforts of the Fitness Instructor, members will receive professional, safe care in a well maintained and friendly environment. The Fitness Instructor will demonstrate the character values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility at all times.

JOB FUNCTION:

1.Focused Fitness Orientations

a.Performs all orientations safely, efficiently, and professionally following branch guidelines and standards.

b.Prescribe a full exercise program that is safe, effective, and personalized for each member.

c.Adjust orientation to accommodate the needs of the member.

d.Promote all organization programs and services with a goal to integrate members into as many offerings as possible

2.Member Service

a.Be visible, available, approachable, and identifiable for all members with questions, even when busy performing other duties.

b.Observe exercise tolerance and safety of all equipment exercisers, and respectfully advise any member who may need help.

c.Address the member population with ease and enjoyment. Be amiable and professional at all times

d.Record the names, goals, and exercise prescription of members on a regular basis.

e.Monitor heart rates, blood pressure, and/or perceived exertion of participants

f.Perform follow up calls of previous participants

g.When not in an appointment or performing other assigned duties, be on the floor making contact with all exercisers.

h.Book fitness (and other appropriate) appointments using the proper procedure.

i.Keep updated on all programs and policies of the branch. Answer member questions with regard to these, and promote all programs.

j.Independently gain knowledge through a variety of means. Be confident with all information you are giving. If you are unsure of the answer, pursue the knowledge and follow up with the member.

3.Member Retention

a.Follow Association's current Retention formal procedures.

b.Follow all member service protocols outlined above.

c.Actively seek ways to retain each individual member (phone calls, articles, etc).

4.Be an Active Member of your branch team.

a.Communicate clearly and professionally to all members and staff. Utilize proper communication methods (logs, etc) Seek to improve / resolve conflict.

b.Help out in other areas of the center as needed.

c.Assist with special events, open houses, demonstrations, health and fitness fairs and verbal announcements.

d.Support management decisions.

e.Attend all departmental meetings.

f.Take the initiative to “go the extra mile” when necessary.

g.Follow proper administrative procedures (time card, subbing, calling in if running late or sick, etc).

h.Sub for other members of the staff on a regular basis whenever possible, including “last minute.”

i.Be positive toward the organization and your job at all times.

j.Actively promote team spirit among other staff members (through communication logs, positive reinforcement, notes to supervisors, etc)

5.Miscellaneous Duties

a.Maintain all pertinent certifications and supply copies of certifications when renewed.

b.Complete other projects as necessary, without always being asked (copy forms, file forms, bulletin boards, etc), and in a timely manner.

c.Keep areas stocked with appropriate forms, articles, handouts, etc.

d.Follow all opening and closing procedures as outlined during training.

a.Ensure that the Advanced Fitness Center and Strength Fitness Center are neat, clean and secure. Clean andmaintain all equipment assigned during shift. Clean additional areas iftime allows.

b.Conduct maintenance and housekeeping duties including lubricating machines, cleaning upholstery, light maintenance duties, vacuuming.

c.Use appropriate cleaning/maintenance materials

d.Stock all areas with appropriate cleaning materials.

e.Follow appropriate procedures when equipment fails. (use log, numbering system, proper signage, etc)

f.Fix equipment when appropriate (reset, etc).

g.Make regular sweeps through all areas of the fitness center, to ensure safety and cleanliness. Take proper action when not up to standard (stack weights, pick up magazines).

h.Control temperature in workout areas to recommended ranges

Requirements:

A degree in Fitness, Health or related field is desirable

Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs

Current CPR and AED certification

Experience in a fitness center setting with one – on – one and group consultations helpful

Outstanding organizational skills, member service skills, and communication skills.

Ability to work in a team environment and independently.

Professional appearance & demeanor at all times

Initiative to create new programs, projects, &/or procedures

Punctual, prepared & responsible

Keeps up with industry changes, willing to increase knowledge in field

Ability to highlight, promote, and participate in other programs offered at the branch

Must be able to walk, stand and move around during the work day
