General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property, and maintains all fire equipment. Receives and responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls performing the necessary functions and operations to efficiently handle any fireground situation. Performs fire inspections and pre-fire planning, minor vehicle and equipment maintenance, and other related tasks. Responds to emergency situations requiring emergency medical attention and performs duties of an EMT. Acquires and maintains required State certification for Firefighter I and EMT. Reports to the Fire Captain and to the Incident Commander as required by the National Incident Management System.

Minimum Training and Experience

Education:
High school diploma or GED

Experience:
One (1) to two (2) years of fire suppression experience preferred

Certifications:
  • Minimum age 19
  • Good physical condition
  • Possesses all members of both upper and lower extremities
  • Vision correctable to 20/20
  • Good moral character and reputation
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Emergency Medical Technician Certification

  • The City retains the right to determine equivalencies.
  • Any certifications not possessed at hire, must be obtained before the employee is removed from probation in order to continue employment with the City.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically able to operate a ladder truck, automobile, fire apparatus, extrication equipment, various fire, medical, and police equipment. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or up to twenty pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Medium work must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to one hundred pounds.
