Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

University Development’s purpose is to support the mission of the university by raising private resources to enhance financial support for students, faculty, programs and facilities. University Development provides leadership and centralized services to all development offices throughout the University, serving as a focal point for annual giving, application development and IT support; campaign management; constituent programs; corporate and foundation relations; donor relations; gift planning; gift services; industry relations; marketing/communications; parents giving; principal gifts; prospect management, research and analytics; regional programs; scholarships and student aid; talent management; university events; and volunteer engagement.



Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Executive Director of Development for Scholarship Support reports to the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Development (SAVC) and works closely with the Vice Provost for Enrollment. In consultation with the SAVC and Vice Provost, the Executive Director is responsible for creating a strategic vision to significantly increase private support for undergraduate students and leading the team and fundraising for one of the University’s most pressing priorities. This position is the lead fundraiser for undergraduate student support, staffs the Vice Provost’s work with select principal prospects, and manages a personal portfolio of major and principal prospects

The Executive Director will work closely with the SAVC and Vice Provost to set and achieve ambitious and achievable fundraising goals for undergraduate student support. The Executive Director will be responsible for raising revenue through the solicitation of annual, major, principal, and planned gifts, as well as corporate and foundation grants. Possessing an innovative, strategic, and entrepreneurial approach, the successful candidate will systematically forge new and existing prospect relationships.

The Executive Director will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key alliances across campus and within University Development i order to achieve strategic fundraising goals. The position will create and serve as primary liaison to a new fundraising advisory board to advance the Office of Enrollment’s mission, vision, and values.

The Executive Director will provide vision and leadership to an expanded, blended team of direct and indirect reports, pulling together the existing fundraisers with associated staff in UDO and the Office of Enrollment to work towards a common fundraising purpose. The position will provide team leadership to expand and grow annual giving, engagement, and stewardship programs to steward existing donors, and expand and diversify the donor base.



Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with three years or greater of related professional experience; for candidates demonstrating comparable professional backgrounds, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and five years or greater of relevant experience in substitution.



Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The Executive Director will be a polished fundraising professional who values and understands the nature and purpose of public higher education. Proven ability to cultivate, solicit and close major, leadership and principal gifts or significant large dollar product sales.



Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Leading candidates will have: A minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible major gifts or transferrable experience. Preference will be given to candidates with development experience in a complex university setting. A high energy individual with a strong work ethic and a history of resolve and successful accomplishment, which includes leading substantive culture change and creating a support structure. The ability to effectively communicate with peers, university leaders, and staff both verbally and in written format is extremely important. Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships. Experience nurturing and motivating development or sales professionals to foster professional growth and exceed organizational goals. Ability to interact effectively in a comprehensive organization such as a research university setting. An employment history highlighted by increasing levels of responsibility and a demonstrated ability to exercise sensitivity and good judgment in dealing with staff and the public. Proven history of setting the strategy for and accomplishing business objectives. Ability to not only provide but actively interpret data, using said information to set strategies, and actively forecast results. Excellent software skills and proficiency in MS Office applications and CRM/Fundraising database software.
