The University of Notre Dame seeks to be the world's leading global, Catholic research university. The Provost is the University's chief academic officer and the provost's office oversees the university's academic core, serving as its principal representative to both internal and external constituencies. Working with a leadership team including seven deans, four associate provosts, the Vice President for Research, the Associate Provost and Vice President for Internationalization, the Vice President for Undergraduate Enrollment, and other academic leaders, he seeks to cultivate a learning community that challenges and engages students, inspires leading research and scholarship, and honors intellectual inquiry as the pursuit of truth.
Reporting to the Provost and serving as a member of the Provost's Cabinet, the Executive Director of Academic Communications [EDAC] is a core member of this team. In partnership with the Provost, Associate Provosts, Senior Advisor to the Provost and other academic leaders, the executive director leads strategic communications and marketing efforts for the academy, with special emphasis on building a culture of collaboration and excellence with internal audiences and promoting Notre Dame's academic and research strengths with external audiences. The executive director, in partnership with the deans and associate provosts, provides leadership to communications staff members assigned to colleges, schools, and other academic units reporting to the Office of the Provost to ensure a strong and unified communications strategy across Notre Dame's academic units. The executive director ensures coordination of all communications plans and activities with the Office of the President, Office of the Executive Vice President, the Office of Public Affairs and Communications, and other communications offices across the University as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Strategic Communications Planning and Execution - Develop and oversee the implementation of a strategic communications plan for the Office of the Provost including outlining objectives, target audiences, content, and delivery mechanisms. The plan will include communications strategies for all members and units of the Office of the Provost, with a goal of enhancing academic reputation and visibility on and off campus. 50%

  • Content Generation - Provide editorial writing and editing; generate and oversee execution of communications materials on behalf of the Office of the Provost for various internal and external audiences, to include speeches, presentations, stewardship reports, letters to faculty, correspondence and copy for websites and marketing materials. 20%

  • Counsel and Collaboration - Provide leadership to communications staff in the colleges and non-collegiate units that report directly to the Provost's Office (e.g., Notre Dame International, the Idea Center, and the Graduate School) to create strategic alignment and unified messaging. 15%

  • Coordination with University Programs - Establish sustained coordination with University-wide communications programs (e.g. positioning, branding, marketing) to ensure strategic alignment and robust academic messaging across the University.15%





Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree7 or more years experience within Executive CommunicationsHigher Education experience preferred
