Apex Legends is looking for an Environment Artist to come join us in expanding the Apex Universe at our growing Madison Wisconsin location.

Reporting to the World Director, you will:

  • Build worlds and environments, from individual assets through to entire levels or sets.
  • Deconstruct concept art and style guides into initial blockouts and asset breakdowns.
  • Take constructive feedback from the Art Director, Lead Artist, and Senior Artists and act on it promptly.
  • Collaborate with Designers and other domains, to ensure levels and assets support the gameplay.
  • Create final assets, maximizing opportunities for reuse, modular construction, and technical efficiency.
  • Create terrain features, using heightfields, modeled elements, and using object scattering/placement tools.
  • Set dress levels that convey a sense of depth and storytelling in the Apex universe.
  • Work with multiple disciplines to produce engaging seasonal content for Apex Legends that continues to engage and grow our playerbase while expanding the in-game world in new and ways.
  • Support the Art team and your peers in continuing to improve pipelines, enhance the quality of each other’s art, and improve in an exciting and always evolving creative space.

Ideally, you will have…

  • Asset creation abilities across a broad range of subject matter, e.g. hard-surface/architecture/organic assets/vegetation.
  • 3+ years of experience creating complex terrains, using hand-authored and procedural workflows and tools.
  • Paint photorealistic PBR surfaces, using Substance Painter.
  • High fidelity modeling skills (using Maya or similar), and high-to-low poly baking experience.
  • Experience breaking down levels/scenes into efficient asset sets and components.
  • Knowledge and experience with content-driven game engines (e.g. Unreal, Frostbite, Unity, GtkRadiant).
  • 3+ years of experience collaborating directly with Designers, Engineers, and Tech Artists.
  • Passionate about creating and working in an inclusive, diverse, and creatively empowering workplace.
  • Experience with a proprietary game engine, tools, and assets.
  • Photogrammetry and Substance Designer experience.
  • 3+ years of experience with perforce and technical challenges.
  • Experience mentoring, delegating to, and/or directly leading other Artists.

  • Examples of levels and assets that were created/owned from start to finish.
  • Sets, assets, and environments that demonstrate an understanding of real-world construction, material properties, and organic wear and tear.
  • Work examples demonstrating composition and visual storytelling skills.
  • Examples of assets and levels that demonstrate world-building and content creation processes, including modular construction and efficient distribution of detail.
  • Clear breakdown of what you did for each work example shown.
  • Any additional work highlighting your artistic skills, vision, and creativity.
