Position Information

New Hanover County is seeking an emergency vehicle technician to perform technical duties involving the repair and maintenance of Emergency Fire Apparatus vehicles and other specialized equipment. This position will also coordinate large repairs with outside vendors, as needed. The schedule of needed work will come from a prescribed preventative maintenance schedule as well as repair requests that come in. This position will be responsible for integrating the two and determining how and when the work will be done. This position will report directly to a Deputy Fire Chief but must be able to work independently.

Duties include the following:


  • Perform preventative maintenance by inspection and diagnosis of mechanical problems, determining the required repair or replacement of parts on Emergency Fire Apparatus vehicles and equipment.
  • Complete vehicle, fire pump, and equipment performance testing to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and laws.
  • Perform rapid response to on-scene incidents performing in-field maintenance as required.
  • Operate various mechanical equipment and ensure the adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Create and maintain department filling system, for the purpose of tracking inventory and maintenance history of apparatuses and equipment.
  • Assist in the process of writing apparatus specifications for the purchasing of new equipment.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or General Equivalent Diploma (GED) and three (3) years of related mechanic or automotive repair experience. Must have class B driver's license and good driving record. Certification as Pierce Master Technician is highly preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid class B NC Driver's License

Within 1 year must have

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician – Fire Apparatus Level I

Within 2 years must have

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician – Fire Apparatus Level II

Within 3 years must have

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician – Fire Apparatus Master Level III
  • AES Medium-Heavy Truck Certification

Other Information

Work hours are Monday - Friday 7:30 - 4:00. Must be available to work during emergency situations.

Compensation: The hiring range for this position is $48,678 - $65,715 plus a competitive benefits package. Salary is negotiable within the hiring range, depending on qualifications.
