JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Penn State Center for Dirt & Gravel Road Studies is seeking an Extension Associate that will be responsible for providing education, outreach, and technical assistance to the Commonwealth’s Dirt, Gravel & Low-Volume Roads Program. This role will be filled as a level 2. This position is responsible for direct on-site and remote technical assistance, educational trainings, and oversight of projects for a variety of public stakeholders throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, relating to the maintenance of dirt, gravel, and paved low-volume roads.
Responsibilities include:
Assisting conservation districts and local municipalities with planning, implementation, and oversight on a wide variety of road projects, including stream crossing assessments and installations.
Delivering the Penn State Center for Dirt & Gravel Road Studies’ 2-day Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance roads course.
Yearly updating of educational training programs and training materials.
Organizing and leading workshops, field demonstrations, and tours for the benefit of public road owning entities, governmental agencies, and stakeholders.
This position typically requires a Master’s degree or higher plus two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degrees in environmental-related or engineering-related fields are preferred. The successful candidate must be self-motivated and have exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills. Additional experience with stream crossing replacements, stream bank stabilization, and stream hydrology is preferred.
This is a limited-term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with an excellent possibility of refunding. The job duties require a significant amount of travel within Pennsylvania, including overnight stays. This position can be filled as a remote position or as a flexible work arrangement that combines remote and on-campus work. Clearances:
This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
