JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Center for Dirt & Gravel Road Studies is seeking an Extension Associate that will be responsible for providing education, outreach, and technical assistance to the Commonwealth’s Dirt, Gravel & Low-Volume Roads Program. This role will be filled as a level 2. This position is responsible for direct on-site and remote technical assistance, educational trainings, and oversight of projects for a variety of public stakeholders throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, relating to the maintenance of dirt, gravel, and paved low-volume roads.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting conservation districts and local municipalities with planning, implementation, and oversight on a wide variety of road projects, including stream crossing assessments and installations.

  • Delivering the Penn State Center for Dirt & Gravel Road Studies’ 2-day Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance roads course.

  • Yearly updating of educational training programs and training materials.

  • Organizing and leading workshops, field demonstrations, and tours for the benefit of public road owning entities, governmental agencies, and stakeholders.

This position typically requires a Master’s degree or higher plus two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degrees in environmental-related or engineering-related fields are preferred. The successful candidate must be self-motivated and have exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills. Additional experience with stream crossing replacements, stream bank stabilization, and stream hydrology is preferred.

This is a limited-term appointment, funded for one year from date of hire, with an excellent possibility of refunding. The job duties require a significant amount of travel within Pennsylvania, including overnight stays. This position can be filled as a remote position or as a flexible work arrangement that combines remote and on-campus work. Clearances:

This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
