  • Earned Master’s-level degree in College Student Development, Higher Education or related field or a demonstrated commensurate level of experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
About the Student Union - As the centerpiece of the Appalachian campus, the Plemmons Student Union (PSU) facilitates the mission of the University by providing opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in a variety of programs that enhance learning and foster an appreciation for college life and campus diversity. The W. H. Plemmons Student Union opened in 1967 then was renovated and expanded in 1995, 2004, and 2012. The Plemmons Student Union is supported almost exclusively by student fees and is intended primarily to serve the educational, social and recreational needs of Appalachian State University students. It serves as a central hub for student activities at Appalachian State University and houses many departments and clubs pertaining to student life.

The Director of the Plemmons Student Union is responsible for supporting people and stewarding facilities which, together, serve as a true “center” of our vibrant campus community. This key position oversees the daily operations of the Plemmons Student Union to insure services, programs and facility usage serve the educational mission of Appalachian State University. Through the daily leadership and coordination of the Union’s operations staff, the Director maintains efficient usage of facility space for meetings and special programs. The Director also champions an ongoing commitment to both leadership and professional development of approximately 160 student staff through a comprehensive student employee development program.

About the Role - The Director supervises 17 full-time professional staff positions. These include: Assistant Director for Building Operations, Assistant Director for Building Services, Assistant Director for Event Services, Audio Visual Manager, Evening Manager, Evening and Weekend Coordinator, Information Desk Manager, Coordinator for Event Services, Maintenance Mechanic, Eight Housekeeping Staff and one Graduate Assistant.
The Director reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

Specific Position Responsibilities Include:
  • Collaborate with other key departments from the Division of Student Affairs and across campus in the development and execution of engagement experiences. Such key departments include, but are not limited to, Campus Activities, New Mountaineer and Family Engagement, Intercultural Student Affairs, Career Development, Community-Engaged Leadership, Office of Sustainability, and Wellness and Prevention Services.
  • Promotes a sense of team and provides overall leadership of the department.
  • Creates a long-range vision for the department and works to support the strategic plan of the division and the university
  • Establishes a department that is culturally competent and embraces diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Determines departmental needs and priorities; responds accordingly through review of best practices; establishes committees, work groups and focus groups; develops programs, procedures and policies which meet university, divisional and departmental needs.
  • Fosters and facilitates long and short range planning as it relates to the department’s overall program operation and university strategic goals and master plans.
  • Provides leadership and direction for departmental policy and procedural development and implementation.
  • Works in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and various Departmental Directors as it relates to policies and procedures that impact the Student Union operation.
  • Provides direction, leadership and support for a comprehensive student employee development program employing and serving approximately 160 student staff.
  • Provides leadership during campus crises as needed by Emergency Management via use of the Student Union as a campus shelter location.
  • Seeks sustainable initiatives aligning with the academic mission of the university and include the ideals of a just society that embraces all forms of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Works collaboratively with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facility Management, Design and Construction, Physical Plant, and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Leadership Team to provide continuous assessment and planning for renovation and refurbishing needs.
  • Assess and plan for the mechanical and structural maintenance of the Plemmons Student Union and the Legends Social Center as well as ongoing repair, improvements, and major building renovation projects.
