Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Director of Research and Sponsored Programs will provide leadership to the Research and Sponsored Programs Office (RSPO) for pre-award, post award, and other grant supported activities with the goal of moving SUNY Cortland to become a research and sponsored programs leader within SUNY among its peer institutions. The RSPO office works closely with the Research Foundation for SUNY (RF) which is SUNY’s authorized representative for externally funded grants, contracts, and other agreements.

Major Responsibilities
  • Lead all aspects of the sponsored research programs at SUNY Cortland with a continued focus on increasing grant and sponsored activity at the university.
  • Lead collaborative efforts supporting faculty sponsored research endeavors, including pre and post award activities, and other support activities. This includes grant development, budget development, proposal review, contract negotiation and development with partners and/or sponsors.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate federal, state and local governmental agency contacts and corporate contacts for sponsored programs, and, in consultation with the Vice President, propose policies governing funded research and institutional programs.
  • Along with RSPO staff, provide communication, training, and support for interested faculty in understanding and pursuing the roles and responsibilities for administering grants.
  • Assume responsibility for the general grant management activities of the university, including internal and external grant programs of the university.
  • Work closely with the Vice President and academic leadership of the university to plan short-and long-term strategies and policies that support the submission of grant applications.


Functional and Supervisory Relationships
  • The RSPO Director reports to:
    • The Provost with a dotted line relationship to the Vice President for Finance and Management/Research Foundation Operations Manager.
  • Direct reports include:
    • Associate Director for Grant Administration
    • Administrative Assistant/Program Aide
  • Works closely with:
    • Research Foundation for SUNY (RF) Central Office Staff
    • SUNY Cortland’s Human Resources Manager for RF



Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience working within the field of research and sponsored program administration, with a particular focus on grant development.
  • Evidence of knowledge of the field of grant proposal writing and sponsored program administration.
  • Effective written communication, editing and proofreading skills, with previous professional experience in these areas.
  • Demonstrated record of collaborative problem-solving, planning and implementation experiences at the leadership level.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree
  • Demonstrated record of cultural competency and actively engaged in diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Experience working with various technologies and software applications to track and analyze data.
  • Experience working with budgets, procurement processes, and fiscal planning.
  • Five years progressively responsible administrative experience.
