General Responsibilities:
The Director of Nursing will provide clinical and technical oversight to the clinical support leaders and teams in their assigned clinical area(s). Duties include, but are not limited to, managing the nurse managers and medical assistant supervisors of their clinical areas who are responsible for the day-to-day functions of the nursing and clinical support staff by facilitating problem-solving strategies, ensuring adequate and safe staffing, implementing professional development plans/programs, project management of strategic goals and objectives and ensuring the delivery of clinical best practice for all clinical support staff at their site.

This leader must successfully identify problems, consider variables, and develop feasible solutions in a timely manner for any obstacles impacting clinical operations. They ensure high-quality clinical and customer service by promptly addressing staff and patient issues and using previously established practice guidelines to offer advice and health information. They will act as a resource for clinical staff and leaders regarding patient healthcare needs and will provide leadership in support of high staff morale and productivity.

The Director of Nursing must work collaboratively with the Practice Director and Medical Director to facilitate clinical operations. Governance of a clinical site location or department is a coordinated effort between these three organizational leaders in a check and balance effort to ensure that the community of patients and staff members are represented fairly and safely.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Current State of Rhode Island license
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and/or Health Care Administration
  • Broad knowledge base of relevant professional, technical, and clinical information in assigned clinical area
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Nursing and/or Health Care Administration
  • 3-5 years leadership within Ambulatory Health Care experience or FQHC experience

Significant Job Functions:
  • Develop and lead staff by coaching, example, instruction, mentoring and disciplinary intervention.
  • Provides regular feedback direct and indirect reports in addition to yearly performance evaluations.
  • Acts as a resource person for clinical staff regarding all aspects of day-to-day operations
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and suggest appropriate changes of the nursing care phase of the health care plan, based on the needs of the patient and family.
  • Participate in state and federal regulatory and compliance projects and site visits as required.
  • Analysis and monitoring of quality measures, promotes clinical process improvement.
  • Directs clinical support staff productivity and efficiency in operations
  • Evaluates and promotes infection control measures in the department.
  • Accurately performs measurements and clinical testing procedures according to policies and procedures and ensures staff compliance.
  • Directs and participates in performance improvement activities to improve quality of care and safety to assure that the health care team meet and exceed established standards of practice and benchmarks
  • Maintains OSHA and HIPPA guidelines
  • Responsible for site budget review and development, including FTE vacancy rate
  • Executes and monitors the strategic goals pertinent to the department.
  • Provides health care education and information for staff; maintains current and broad-based knowledge of assigned area.
  • Lead and coordinate staff meetings and educational sessions.
  • Represent and advocate for growth and support in their assigned clinical department area.
Physical Effort/ Environment:
  • This is a hybrid position, allowing duties to be performed from home or at a Thundermist site.
  • Moderate physical activity walking, standing, stooping, occasional lifting. Potential
exposure to blood borne pathogens, respiratory diseases (ie TB), and other infectious

diseases and other biohazardous material.

  • Organizational skills, cleaning, neatness.
Work Schedule Demands:
  • As scheduled during hours of operation (inclusive of weekend and evening hours as assigned) with occasional unscheduled overtime.
Communication Skills:
  • Interpreting technical medical terminology daily. Uses all available methods of communication with patients such as with interpreting, counseling, group discussion, written materials, and visual aids. Communicating and identifying cultural, social, and economical characteristics of the patient population served.
  • Able to document clearly and concisely in the medical record.
  • Able to perform clinical audits; databases as assigned.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and communicate in a professional manner with patients, their families, staff and outside contacts
