Job Description for the Director of Music

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of and in collaboration with the parish pastor, the music director will:
  • Recruit and train volunteer cantors and choir members and other musicians when needed and appropriate.
  • Direct and schedule weekly rehearsal of the choir and cantors.
  • Direct choirs, which may include but are not limited to parish adult choir, children’s choir, handbell choirs.
    • Adult choir is expected to sing for parish Sunday Mass, Christmas, Easter and other special liturgical celebrations.
  • Develop standards for choir members and cantors that include expectations and guidelines.
  • Collaborate and participate with the Worship Commission in preparation for celebrations of the liturgical year.
  • Select appropriate music for all Parish Rituals and liturgical celebrations.
  • Play for the weekend and weekday Masses, MCES school masses, Holy Days of Obligation, and significant Liturgical Celebrations as needed.

    • Weddings
    • Liturgical Season Masses and Services and other parish gatherings
  • Ensure that there is a qualified substitute, approved by the pastor, for Masses when the Director of Music is sick, on vacation or otherwise unavailable.
  • Upon approval of the pastor, the Director of Music will order music and maintain the Parish music library, while working within the Parish budget.
  • Ensure instruments and sound equipment are maintained, including tuning, cleaning and repairs.
  • Coordinate rehearsal schedules with the parish administrative assistant and pastor.
  • Implements archdiocesan and parish policies concerning music and liturgy.
  • Ensures that all copyright regulations are followed regarding music reprinting.
  • Participates in parish pastoral staff meetings and collaborates with parish staff.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in music or related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Qualifications:
  • Excellent organ, keyboard, and vocal skills.
  • Strong musical background or equal experience.
  • Is a practicing Catholic.
  • Familiar with and able to play a variety of music styles:
    • Traditional
    • Gospel
    • Classical
    • Contemporary Christian
    • Cultural
  • Extensive knowledge of Catholic liturgy and music resources.
  • Familiarity of the Roman Missal and Lectionary
  • Possess a collaborative spirit with the ability to work with the pastor, parish staff and parishioners.
  • Possess and demonstrate a prayerful, faith-filled spirit.
  • Must possess leadership skills and experience in teaching and leading a church choir and cantors.
  • Must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment and be dependable, self-motivated, and creative.
  • Passion for building and growing a music ministry committed to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
  • Successful completion of Criminal History Background Check and Protecting God’s Children Workshop.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Prolonged periods of playing an organ, piano, or keyboard.
  • Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at a time.
