GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The University of New Haven has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Development, Planned and Major Gifts as part of the University Advancement team. If you are a self-motivated, enthusiastic and creative professional inspired to make an impact in your day-to-day work, please submit your application. This role requires the ability to secure and manage all aspects of outright and planned major gifts through direct interaction with donor prospects, including face-to-face visits, to achieve fundraising goals. The ideal candidate will direct a portfolio of 100 plus prospects and support a select University schools/college to ensure collaboration and strategic alignment of donor engagement with school and program needs. The Director of Development, Planned and Major Gifts will also work closely with Advancement leadership to redesign and implement the University’s planned giving program and strategy and serve as the central development planned giving officer with responsibility for leading, developing, organizing, and marketing planned giving efforts to maximize philanthropic results. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development and working closely with the Vice President for Advancement, this position requires a special knowledge and technical expertise related to donor estate planning and asset management.

The Director of Development, Planned and Major Gifts is a member of the Office of Advancement and reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Development.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Cultivate and solicit outright and planned major gifts with fundraising attainment goals established annually; Qualify and cultivate new major gift prospects.
  • Develop and actively manage a portfolio of 100 plus major and planned giving prospects.
  • Support a select University schools or colleges to ensure collaboration and strategic alignment of donor engagement with school and program needs. Work with appropriate university staff to assure effective coordination of cultivation activities.
  • Support the President, Deans, program directors and relevant faculty in planned and major gift related development activities.
  • Develop and implement a marketing, outreach and engagement strategy that promotes gift planning principles and arrangements; administer support for estate and post-gift processes.
  • Establish long-range goals and objectives for the planned gift program, preparing annual operating plans with timetables designed to achieve these goals and objectives.
  • Identify new sources of potential planned gift support. Identify, create, and execute cultivation and solicitation strategies for prospects; Apply expert knowledge of charitable gift planning techniques, tax law and regulations, and university planned giving opportunities to maximize private support; Solicit and complete gifts through bequests, life estate agreements, charitable lead trusts, life insurance policies, retirement plans and other arrangements.
  • Build and maintain relationships with professional advisors such as attorneys, accountants, trust officers, and financial advisors in order to assist donors in incorporating appropriate gift provisions in their financial and estate plans. Prepare gift proposals for donors and their advisors, tailoring the gift plan to each donor's requirements.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of planned gift marketing efforts including direct mail pieces and newsletters. Work closely with the Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship to devise and implement a stewardship program for Planned Gifts to assure regular contact with donors through the Ellis C. Maxcy Legacy Society.
  • Develop strategies, plan, and coordinate special planned gift outreach events to identify and expand the base of potential donors
  • Serve as the development team’s planned giving liaison and expert by provide special knowledge and technical expertise related to donor estate planning, and asset management; Train development staff in planned giving conversations and vehicles.
  • Work closely with the Associate Vice President for Development to assure the development of relationships with planned and major gift prospects and donors that will maximize their giving potential over time. Meet monthly and annual to review metrics and fundraising goals.
  • Support the activities of Alumni Relations collaborating on the engagement of major gift prospects within the university.
  • Job duties will require frequent travel by both car and airplane.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor's Degree (Graduate degree is a plus) and 5+ years relevant experience in fundraising, gift planning, major gift cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, managing donor and other stakeholder communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • significant demonstrable success in securing six-figure gifts.
  • Thorough knowledge of development principles and moves management with a minimum of five years’ experience in face-to-face fund raising,
  • Familiarity with fund-raising software programs, experience with Raisers Edge is preferred.
  • Excellent writing, presentation, public speaking, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Natural leadership skills, professional demeanor, attention to detail and the ability to interact and communicate with diverse constituencies and to work collaboratively in teams and across departments.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with donors, prospective donors, including cultivation and solicitations, along with an ability to match donor interests to the school's programs and priorities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, adhering to deadlines and adjusting to shifting priorities; Strong ability to independently problem solve.
  • Preference for someone with planned giving experience and solid knowledge of planned giving instruments in a non-profit setting or financial planning/trust administration; Experience using planned giving software programs, e.g. Crescendo
  • Thorough knowledge of current tax laws and their implication on planned giving and estate planning, as well as legal and financial aspects of charitable contributions.
  • Proven ability to create and sustain donor trust and relationships among a broad donor constituency.
  • Ability to listen carefully to what people are saying and translate their interests and resources into gifts needed by the university.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively, ethically, creatively and independently in a complex organizational setting with discretion, patience, flexibility, enthusiasm, and humor.
