REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least eight years of relevant experience, or master’s degree plus at least six years of relevant experience

The Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) at the University of Minnesota Duluth invites applications for a Director of Advising and Academic Services position.

The director provides strategic leadership, day-to-day management and supervision of the Academic Advising program in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE). This position provides strategic planning and management of the School's academic advising program that serves approximately 1,700 undergraduate students. The director also provides expertise and guidance on curriculum development, policies, and procedures, and makes interpretations of complex policies and procedures and manages non-routine issues.

This is a 1.0 FTE, 12-month, on-campus position.


JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.

Leadership for Academic Advising Services (30%)

  • Analyze and review existing policies and procedures for relevance and currency and recommend suggestions for improvement to LSBE administrators and faculty.
  • Create and utilize measurement tools to assess outcomes such as student satisfaction and program success. Incorporate the results of these assessments and feedback into the continuous improvement process.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise all advising processes to maximize efficiency for students and advisors.
  • Review and manage the Advising department budget. This includes forecasting expenses and strategically reviewing spending plans that utilize and conserve available financial resources.
  • Create, plan, and manage LSBE student programming designed to increase student retention and graduation rates.
  • Encourage LSBE student participation in active learning activities, specifically internship and research projects.
  • Advise students and help other members of the advising staff on complex advising issues.

Manage daily operations of Academic Advising (30%)

  • Assign and supervise the work of five staff and approximately 3 student employees. This includes balancing staff responsibilities and re-assigning when necessary.
  • Design training sessions for student workers to ensure proper knowledge and background to be competent and productive in their work. Create and maintain policy and procedures manuals for student employees.
  • Make decisions regarding admissibility into LSBE programs and manage communication to students.
  • Manage the graduation clearance, change of college, re-enrollment and multi-institution application processes.
  • Monitor advisors’ work performance and provide feedback to ensure tasks are completed accurately by stated deadlines.
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals department employees.
  • Motivate employees to perform at their best.
  • Select, train, and develop employees, including helping staff become effective in supervising student workers.
  • Collect, analyze, and report admissions data to LSBE administrators.

Engage in complex problem solving (20%)

  • Manage interactions/communications with students, faculty, parents, and external constituents when concerns are reported.
  • Make final decisions regarding student requests for exceptions to policies, procedures, and degree requirements while upholding the integrity of the university.
  • Counsel students through the misconduct and formal complaint processes. Assist faculty with the academic dishonesty reporting process.
  • Assist students with developing an appropriate action plan to solve problems.
  • Determine outstanding degree requirements for students with complex graduation issues.
  • Perform troubleshooting when the registration system will not allow a student into a class.
  • Review curriculum proposals and identify suggestions for improvement to ensure that proposals are accurate and meet the conditions for being approved. Provide awareness to faculty about how proposed changes will impact degree requirements.
  • Make final decisions on academic dismissals. Meet with students and/or parents to discuss strategies for regaining admissibility.
  • Manage the accuracy of curriculum in the campus course and curriculum systems.

Direct the enrollment management process for LSBE (10%)

  • Monitor enrollment in all LSBE programs.
  • Identify courses with low enrollment and create strategies for increasing enrollment.
  • Coordinate visits to develop partnerships with community colleges.
  • Maintain transfer guides for top 30 feeder schools.
  • Meet with high school counselors to highlight LSBE programs.
  • Manage and coordinate LSBE's participation at campus visit programs with the goal of maintaining or increasing our overall enrollment.
  • Meet with prospective students and their families to discuss LSBE programs, unique learning opportunities, and the advantages of obtaining an education from LSBE. Also meet with prospective student-athletes and their families.
  • Coordinate with department heads on maintaining prospective student brochures that accurately describe the curriculum and program goals and objectives.

Service to LSBE and Campus (10%)

  • Serve on multiple school and campus committees. Use expertise and knowledge in providing thoughtful and helpful comments during discussions that lead to the creation and modification of policies, procedures, and action plans to improve the UMD experience for our students, staff, and faculty.
  • Other duties as assigned

ABOUT LSBE:

Approximately 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students are currently enrolled in the school’s programs. Both the undergraduate and graduate programs are AACSB-International accredited. The school is housed in a state-of-the-art building. LSBE has approximately 50 full-time faculty members in four academic departments: Accounting and Finance, Economics and Health Care Management, Management Studies, and Marketing. The School offers Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Business Administration and MBA degrees. Regional outreach is accomplished primarily through activities of the Bureau of Business and Economics Research.
