The Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center ( MCAREC ) is seeking a Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The incumbent will serve as the Director at the Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center (MCAREC) in the College of Agricultural Sciences. MCAREC is located in Hood River, Oregon, central to a region known for its production of pears, cherries, apples, and wine grapes. The Director provides overall leadership and administration of MCAREC, including fiscal and personnel oversight, ensures high-quality research and extension programs at MCAREC, fosters research and outreach efforts of the staff, establishes priorities and long-range plans, works with external advisory committees and participates in community and industry meetings. The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The incumbent promotes collaboration among on- and off-campus faculty, other departments, branch stations, and industry in the agriculture sector and related natural resource fields.
The Director is expected to develop and conduct an extramurally funded, innovative research and/or extension program that benefits agricultural production and/or natural resource management in Oregon, the United States, and globally, and that complements existing research and extension programs at MCAREC. OSU Extension’s Hood River office is in a MCAREC station building.
The Director will establish and maintain strong ties with industry and natural resource agencies and will be a recognized national and international leader in a discipline related to agriculture, including agronomy, agricultural economics, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, soils, social sciences, water resources or a closely allied field.

Position Duties
50% ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION
Lead and manage MCAREC in the conduct of research and extension to enhance economic and social value of agriculture and related natural resources in the region. Engage and cooperate with the Agricultural Experiment Station administration, the MCAREC advisory board, all Departments associated with the activities of MCAREC, the public, natural resource agencies, and the agricultural industry. Work closely with the faculty of MCAREC and assure cooperation with OSU Extension, Columbia Gorge Community College, the Oregon Department of Agriculture, the Oregon Department of Water Resources, and other state and federal agencies.
Supervise faculty and staff, including performance reviews, professional development, mentoring, managing leave and travel approvals, in addition to all other human resource-related functions.
Assist tenure-track faculty with the tenure and promotion process in collaboration with their respective academic department head.
Manage budgets and review grants and accounting associated with MCAREC programs. Oversee hiring, supervision, and annual reviews in conjunction with the appropriate academic departments including Botany and Plant Pathology, Crop and Soil Science, and Horticulture. Develop and supervise effective mentoring programs that ensure faculty success.
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Develop and model effective internal and external communications. Oversee strategic planning and goal setting; develop and steward donors. Work collaboratively with the heads of other units to help ensure cross-college planning, coordination, joint programs, and other activities that advance the unit’s mission. Build on MCAREC’s widely recognized regional, national and international leadership in agriculture and natural resources by effectively communicating a shared vision.
Administer unit budgets of approximately $1.3 million annually. Provide leadership to faculty by supporting effective mentoring relationships and promoting collegial interactions and collaboration to help them achieve their goals and to enhance mutual success. Serve as a representative of and spokesperson for MCAREC with stakeholders. In addition, serve as an advocate for MCAREC with stakeholders on and off campus.
Conduct performance evaluations for faculty and staff. Collaborate with department heads of the academic homes for faculty during the evaluation process and during the promotion and tenure process.
Facilitate a pathway for the transfer of research information from the MCAREC to the industry and natural resource organizations and assist with applying and integrating this information in ways that clearly serve the needs of stakeholders at state, regional, national, and international levels. Serve as a conduit to address stakeholder needs through faculty research, teaching and extension programs.
Work cooperatively with the industry and natural resource groups through outreach programs, conferences and workshops, and in collaboration with College of Agricultural Sciences, extension programs across the region. Work in strong partnership with key organizations such as Columbia Gorge Community College, local Native American Tribes, Oregon Department of Agriculture, Oregon Department of Water Resources, commodity commissions (e.g., Oregon Potato Commission, Oregon Grass Seed Council, Oregon Wheat Commission USDA Forest Service) and other regional, national and international organizations, including counterparts at other universities.
Work collaboratively with development officers and the Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences to develop private gifts that provide new station facilities, establish endowed professorships, and/or support of station personnel and operations.
40% RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP
Develop and conduct an extramurally funded, innovative research program that provides timely information that benefits agricultural production and/or natural resource management in Oregon, the United States, and globally.
Collaborate with scientists from MCAREC and other OSU units, other universities, and agencies (e.g., ARS, USFS) in interdisciplinary research and extension programs aiming to promote sustainable and profitable agricultural production.
Scholarly outcomes expected for this position may include the following: development of sponsored research proposals and contracts, publication of technical reports, extension bulletins, journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings; award of patents; and presentations at scientific meetings and conferences.
10% SERVICE
Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with professional organizations and agencies that have interests in agriculture. Serve on the College of Agricultural Sciences administrative team. Serve on state, regional, and national advisory committees as appropriate to position responsibilities. Serve on College of Agricultural Sciences and other University committees as appropriate and as requested by the Department, College, Extension Services, and the University.
The incumbent will be required to drive a vehicle to complete a portion of the duties described above.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in agronomy, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, soils, or a related discipline related to agriculture.

National/international record of scholarly achievement in research, extension, instructional and/or service activities commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.

Five years of experience supervising and managing personnel.

Five years of experience with budget development and success in meeting budgetary goals.

Clear understanding and commitment to the mission of land grant institutions.

Outstanding professional and collaborative leadership.

Ability to work both independently and cooperatively within a team.

Success in securing internal and external programmatic support for instruction, research, service or outreach. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in public agencies and private organizations, growers, volunteers, and the public.

Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Ability to travel frequently within Oregon.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
National/international record of scholarly achievement in research, extension, instructional and/or service activities commensurate with the rank of Full Professor with tenure.

Demonstrated success in donor development and stewardship.

Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.

Demonstrated successful leadership in the strategic planning and management of a large and complex organization or research program.

Demonstrated commitment to the recruitment, retention, success, and support of faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.

Experience in liaison roles with local communities.

Familiarity with relevant State and Federal research agencies and programs.

Demonstrated experience leading research or extension teams.

Research experience with tree fruit, wine grapes, and/or berry crops.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Travel between field stations, to field sites, and to meetings around the state.
Decision making required for after-hours emergency responses (e.g., inclement weather).
