Description

Under general supervision (I) or direction (II), maintains, repairs, installs and/or modifies digital systems and equipment; performs other related duties as assigned and required.

APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Digital Systems Electronic Technician I: $31.75 - $40.01 per hour
Digital Systems Electronic Technician II: $34.61 - $43.62 per hour

DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: General Services Agency - Maintenance Department.

Digital Systems Electronics Technicians I and II are represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies in the County of Ventura General Services Agency, Maintenance Department. There is currently one (1) Intermittent vacancy.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further exam upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Installs, tests, repairs and maintains security access and control systems and equipment such as Radionics notification systems, panic alarms, duress alarms, fire alarm, card reader access systems, magnetic door locks, televisions, video cassette recorders, digital recording devices, internet based camera systems, closed circuit cameras, CATV cameras, pan-tilt-zoom controller, x-ray machines, metal detectors, revolving doors, microwave and shaker fence intrusion alarm systems and modems.
  • Installs, tests, repairs and maintains broadcast quality video production equipment such as broadcast quality cameras, video switchers, video tape recorders, video cassette recorders, digital video recorders, multiplexers and overhead projectors, by using test instruments, diagnostic routines and electronics tools to prevent breakdowns in the equipment.
  • Installs, tests, repairs and maintains audio-visual systems and equipment such as meeting room and court house public address sound systems, microphones, speakers, and video-teleconferencing systems.
  • Sets up meeting rooms by moving furniture into requested configurations, ensures all presentation equipment is available as requested and functioning. May provide training to equipment users on the proper operation of the equipment.
  • Assists Digital Systems Electronics Technicians II with the more difficult and complex assignments.
  • Operates hand and power tools in the installation and removal of electronic equipment, including: signal and alarm Court and Jail security, digital equipment, electronic audio and visual systems including public address and closed circuit television system and microwave equipment.
  • Sets up and adjusts broadcast quality video production equipment, and may be required to make minor, emergency repairs using test instruments, diagnostic routines and electronics tools to prepare equipment for immediate use in the broadcast booth and at field locations.
  • Operates a video switcher to switch from one camera to another, load and operate presentations, audio mixers, video cameras, video recorders, audio recorders, electronic graphics machine, and duplicating rack to provide sound and picture of high technical quality.
  • Operates and monitors performance of low-voltage equipment, measures frequencies, modulation and power inputs and outputs, adjusts transmitters and receivers for maximum efficiency and communication (excludes wireless, radio, and microwave equipment in a public safety setting).
  • Works with computer integrated operating software to control, monitor and operate equipment via Internet, modem, or fiber optics lines.
  • Works on electrical systems up to 120 volts.
  • Pulls all types of cable and makes terminations.
  • Installs and tests programmable logic controllers (PLC's), input-output boards, and PC integrated software controls.
  • Performs assignments for agencies and departments to produce the desired results using the appropriate tools in a responsible and safe manner. Provides quality, timely and efficient service in a neat, courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintains Uninterruptible Power Supply systems and batteries for backup.
  • Documents work completed; maintains and updates all preventive maintenance work logs. Reports/inputs data for work order system to capture information on various jobs.
  • Maintains shop tools and equipment in good clean and safe condition.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE
Digital Systems Electronic Technician I:
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities. An example of a qualifying education/experience is: High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a training course in electronic theory and application is desirable.

Some experience in the installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of digital systems electronics is required.

Digital Systems Electronic Technician II:
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities. An example of a qualifying education/experience is: High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a training course in electronic theory and application is desirable.

Considerable experience in the installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of digital systems electronics is required; or, two (2) years' experience as a Digital Systems Electronics Technician I.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license.
  • Must be able to accurately identify color-coded cables and wires for cable termination.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation in accordance with applicable policy may be required to work in a detention environment.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of a certification in the operation of lifts and boom actuated equipment (for working a various heights) is required prior to completion of the probationary period. Any exception (ex. extension of the completion date) to this requirement must be reviewed by Labor Relations and the Deputy Director GSA.
DESIRED
  • Possession of a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator License.
  • Building Industry Consulting Services International (BICSI), Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Principles of electronics, concepts, functions, and applications of state-of-the-art digital and electronic systems; programmable logic controls.

Working knowledge of:

  • Current Windows/Office Suite;

  • Tools and test equipment used in the repair and servicing of equipment and/or systems;
  • Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance;
  • Safety regulations and practices related to installation, maintenance and repair of digital systems/electronics and equipment;
  • Blueprints, schematics, and other design documents.

Skill to:

  • Perform work as required to maintain and repair digital systems/electronic equipment;
  • Troubleshoot equipment (identify and analyze operating problems and determine what to do);
  • Repair equipment (implement changes by using the appropriate tools);
  • Install equipment to meet specifications, and maintain equipment (perform routine maintenance on equipment);
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed;
  • Research regulations and/or technical reference materials;
  • Work with a variety of test equipment and tools;
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.

Ability to:

  • Climb, crawl and work in small areas;
  • Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
Supplemental Information:
  • Incumbents must be able to perform manual labor associated with the repair and servicing of equipment which may include lifting objects weighing in excess of forty (40) pounds;
  • Incumbents may be required to work outside normal business hours and under emergency situations;
  • Work may be performed outdoors and/or under difficult weather conditions;
  • Work may involve working with hazardous materials;
  • Work can include the full range of body movements involving reaching, bending, grasping, and climbing;
  • Work may be performed on lifts at various heights;
  • Work may be performed in a detention facility.

WRITTEN EXAM - 100%: A job-related written exam will be administered to test applicants' knowledge of technical electronics, technical set-up, safety and tool/equipment recognition. Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
