Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):

Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.


Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.


Role Overview
:
The Digital Media Specialist is responsible for creating and producing visual and digital designs to support the branding and messaging of IDEM, as well as individual program areas within the agency. This includes developing video projects, photographic images, audio recordings, and infographics that effectively communicate IDEM's commitment to efficiency and its mission to protect human health and the environment. The specialist will work within the Media and Communications Services (MACS) team to ensure consistency in IDEM's branding and messaging and will collaborate with various program areas such as legal, program support, finance, IT, air, land, and water to meet their specific communication needs. Introduction:

As the Artist Illustrator, you will be responsible for serving as a specialist in a full range of agency programs including the designing, preparing, and construction of various artistic materials including print, audio, photographic, and video materials, and productions.

About the Job:

The Digital Media Specialist will report directly to the Creative Services Director and will be responsible for coordinating a wide range of media projects. The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Producing and editing visual and video content for IDEM's website, social media pages, email newsletters, and third-party channels to support the organization's communication efforts.
  • Providing basic design services for promotional and marketing campaigns, which may include videography, photography, ads, print collateral, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, and media materials.
  • Managing the use of audio/visual equipment by staff to ensure quality production of content.
  • Developing and maintaining a video and photo library for MACS through the creation and curation of staff, stock, and commissioned video and photo material.

In addition to the above responsibilities, this position will also have specific duties as an audio-visual specialist and webcasting technician. This includes:

  • Providing technical assistance for web conferencing support, including presentations, real-time point-to-point communications, and multicast communications.
  • Producing and editing agency products, such as training applications, public service announcements, podcasts, video clips, and animations.
  • Ensuring that all productions (originals and reproductions) effectively convey the intended message to the targeted audience.

As a member of MACS, the Digital Media Specialist must provide a high level of customer service, respond to inquiries with professionalism, and work with their supervisor to complete special assignments. They must also be able to handle changing priorities and workloads, take on new challenges at short notice, and maintain effective, cooperative, and productive work relationships in a team-oriented environment

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Assess the publicity needs of the entire agency and make recommendations.
  • Provide artist illustrator consultations to agency personnel and outside organizations in designing and developing various audio-visual aids and exhibits.
  • Contact sales representatives and select and recommend the purchase of visual aids such as slides and related art supplies and equipment.
  • Supervise and engage in on-site construction and set up of exhibits such as the State Fair, conventions, and expositions.
  • Create, develop, and prepare exhibit materials such as photographs, posters, maps and paintings to be presented to the general public.
  • Plan and design special illustrations, signs, logos, and graphs for agency publications.
  • Make layouts of type, drawings, and photos of projects and exhibits planning color separation, the desired size of the type area, paperweight, and printer ink.
  • Hand letter agency documents for commemorative or award purposes.
  • Operate still and motion cameras in taking photographic material, developing prints, and editing films.
  • Prepare audio-visuals, posters, exhibits, and pamphlets for use by voluntary, local, and state agencies.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, specifically in Graphic Design required.
  • 1-2 years of direct experience or the equivalent in a combination of education and college internships
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite with an emphasis on InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Acrobat, Dreamweaver, or related software programs.
  • Proficient in the use of both still and video camera equipment – must be able to demonstrate the ability to obtain and use effective and professional images to support design projects
  • Extensive knowledge of modern graphic art techniques, printing and hand lettering techniques, and construction and limitation of various display materials.
  • Considerable knowledge of the techniques used in the cropping, mounting, and retouching of still photographs for printing.
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
