Digital Designer Job at Tesla

Tesla Palo Alto, CA

What to Expect

We are looking for a Digital Product Designer who can design user-centered and straightforward solutions for Tesla Energy products. The candidate should be passionate about resolving user pain points through superior design.

The Energy Experience Design team is responsible for the user experience of Tesla Energy products, such as Tesla Powerwall and Solar. We’re also responsible for the experience of installers in the field doing the heavy lifting (literally) in the Tesla mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

We own the Tesla mobile app but are ultimately responsible for all the touchpoints of our customers’ and installers’ journey of converting homes, businesses, and municipalities to solar.

What You’ll Do

We’re a young team where our culture feels more tech startup than tech giant. We pride ourselves on the fact that you won’t find rigid processes or have some exec in an ivory tower dictating how you should be doing your job.

However, Tesla’s mission is time sensitive with a lot to do, so finding innovative ways of approaching your work that are as efficient and effective as possible is an essential part of the role.

Some more specifics:

  • Create comprehensive designs of features in Figma that demonstrate innovative UI and UX, while also leveraging the Tesla design system
  • Evaluate user data, including meeting and interviewing customers, to inform the direction of your features, and gauge how they’re received
  • Find unrecognized opportunities that aren’t on the roadmap and help get them prioritized
  • Communicate and collaborate to build relationships with designers on other teams throughout Tesla to make sure we are all working towards a unified and consistent experience for all of our customers
  • Be a storyteller who thinks about the big picture. Be able to zoom into pixel level detail and zoom all the way out to understand how all the pieces fit together, including pieces other colleagues are working on
  • The ability to quickly understand complex topics you are unfamiliar with and translate that understanding into creative and intuitive solutions
What You’ll Bring
  • 4+ years of working on designing digital products, services and experiences from ideation to implementation
  • Fluency in Figma including working with and contributing to design systems
  • Demonstrated experience in building, prototyping and continually evolving mobile app experiences
  • Ability to create beautiful and creative UI solutions and have strong opinions about what constitutes good design
  • Ability to make sense of complex information and distill it into simple user-facing flows
  • Can communicate clearly and effectively on the design processes, ideas, and solutions to the development teams, business stakeholders, and product management teams
  • Hands-on experience in planning and conducting user research, usability testing, A/B testing, rapid prototyping, heuristic analysis, and identifying accessibility concerns
  • Hunger and passion to find opportunities to help the business beyond just those you’re asked to work on
  • A growth mindset and openness to receiving and integrating feedback and constructive criticism.
  • Prior experience working on UX for connected hardware solutions with a large customer base is a plus
