SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION

Basic purpose of position: Perform the essential inspection and repair functions necessary to maintain company equipment, Road-Railer trailers, bogies and coupler mates in good mechanical operating condition. Associates designated as a "Power Mechanic" are required to maintain appropriate welding certification to make required repairs and are qualified to perform both train inspections and initial airbrake tests. Additionally, an associate designated, as a "Power Mechanic" has mastered the skills required of a "Senior Repairman" and is able to perform essentially error-free work without direct supervision.

Expectation: We expect all associates to be committed to a high standard of safety, be willing and able to comply with all safety policies/rules and willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel. Individuals performing this function must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Job performance without equipment damage is essential to meeting our safety, quality and production requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that management is aware of current condition and needed repair of all company equipment;
  • Maintain required maintenance and repair of all company equipment; utilizing inspection reports to troubleshoot equipment in operation, determine defect and maintenance plan;
  • Ensure that protective guards and safety devices on equipment are in place and within standards required by the manufacturer;
  • Maintain an assortment of personal tools (type determined by manager) sufficient to perform the repair and inspection functions required for classification level;
  • Notify site management of "bad order" (unserviceable) equipment;
  • Perform authorized repairs to customer, company and industry specification;
  • Document all repairs, properly accounting for actual time and parts utilized;
  • Operate various types of mechanical equipment'including forklifts, spotter trucks, etc.;
  • Qualified associate may be required to perform and document FHWA DOT inspections, customer preventive maintenance inspections/repairs, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 215 Freight Car Safety Standards and/or CFR 232 Brake Systems Safety Standards for Freight Cars;
  • Maintain accountability and maintenance for all assigned equipment to include supplied small hand tools;
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required by site management;

Education Requirements: High School Diploma/GED or ability.

Experience Requirements: A minimum of 2 years experience in a position that required the frequent use of welding and oxygen/acetylene cutting skills; mechanical repair of rolling equipment; or completion of an accredited mechanic trade school; or substantial demonstration of mechanical aptitude, as determined by the facility manager, to successfully perform the tasks associated with designated "power mechanic" classification.

Skills, Licenses, Certification, and/or Special Training:

  • Must maintain a valid state driver's license if required to operate company equipment.
  • Meet and maintain all requirements contained in the Conditions of Employment policy.

Physical, Mental & Sensory Requirements:

  • Ability to constantly work in an outdoor environment, exposed to all weather elements, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust and noisy conditions;
  • Ability to open trailer doors using 75 lbs of force;
  • Ability to frequently climb, using various types of ladders, to heights in excess of 16 feet;
  • Ability to occasionally lift above shoulder height a weight of up to 50 pounds;
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 35 lbs;
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 60 lbs;
  • Ability to occasionally work in confined spaces;
  • Ability to frequently hold 30 lbs while squatting and sustaining extreme vibration of impact wrench;
  • Ability to occasionally perform motions necessary to adjust semi-trailer support legs either up or down; such activity requires bending at waist and using both hands to grasp a metal handle and rotate the handle in a circular fashion exerting up to 100 lbs of torque;
  • Ability to frequently bend at waist crouch for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to frequently use bending, twisting, walking motions on uneven surfaces throughout the entire work shift;
  • Ability to occasionally apply opposing forces (one arm pushing while the other arm pulls) sustaining pressure while bent at the waist with hands below the knees;
  • Ability to sustain pressure in awkward positions-occasionally overhead for extended periods up to 2 minutes at a time for a total up to 2 hours per day;
  • Must be able to hear work or safety instructions verbally communicated in a normal speaking voice;
  • Must be able to work independently;
  • Must be able to properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.

Conditions of Employment: Employment is conditional, based on a medical examination which includes a drug screen, and an examination to verify candidates can safely perform the essential functions of the job. Road & Rail Services requires a post-offer motor vehicle reference check, and background check. Employment and military (if applicable) verification required.
