Job Summary: Perform major and minor mechanical repairs on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. In this role the successful candidate is responsible for keeping all equipment in efficient, operable condition; as well as organizing and maintaining a clean and safe service area and garage.

Essential Functions

  • Inspects, adjusts, diagnose, and repairs mechanical defects in the many types of lawn maintenance equipment, plant equipment and large vehicles such as trucks and tractors.
  • Performs general overhaul of motors, including but not limited to, repairing transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, and high-pressure pumps and valves.
  • Installs and adjusts brakes, batteries, tires, wiring, and glass.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks.
  • Rewires ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
  • Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front ends, replaces shock absorbers, and solders leaks in radiators.
  • Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicles.
  • May be responsible for removing and repairing units such as engines, transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, oil changes, and high-pressure pumps and valves.
  • May be responsible for repairing or replacing parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings.
  • Maintains records of preventative maintenance, repairs made, orders, and time worked.
  • Keeps maintenance building neat with parts put up when not in use.
  • Maintains inventory, orders parts, and reorders stock items.
  • Assists in the transportation of broken equipment.
  • Ensures proper use Personnel Protective Equipment and stays focused and engaged.
  • Strives to maintain a safe working environment through the prevention of accidents, the preservation of equipment, and the achievement of safe working practices.
  • Welding materials using the correct materials to join the metals together.
  • Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements.
  • Experience in using electrical or manual tools (saws, squares, calipers etc.)
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (TIG, MMA etc.)
  • Act as primary contact for vendor management such as John Deere representatives.
  • Provide welding repairs to farm equipment and cattle pens.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience with large equipment and truck repairs and maintenance
  • 1 year welding experience preferred.
  • Associates degree in an approved mechanics apprenticeship program preferred.

Working conditions

  • May be required to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Due to the locations of the equipment may be required to work on equipment that is located on other worksites.
  • May be required to work evening and weekends.

Physical requirements

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • Use of torque wrenches, air powered tools or hand tools.
  • Use of arms in a raised position above shoulder level for prolong periods of time. Use of creeper or rolling device to enable tech to work underneath vehicle.
  • The employee frequently is required to walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is required to stand and sit for extended periods of time (hours) while making repairs.
  • Entry or exit from the cab of the vehicle.
  • Climb to a safe position to access the engine compartment area, firewall or roof of a vehicle to perform repairs.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to push/pull large tool chest from vehicle to vehicle.
