Huntsman Cancer Institute ( HCI ) at the University of Utah is deeply committed to a culture defined by justice and is committed to creating an inclusive environment. To enhance our leadership team, we are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader who has demonstrated commitment to eliminating inequities to serve as Senior Director for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Applications are encouraged from Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors leading successful NIH-funded research programs, they must show a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
We are looking for a highly motivated, collaborative investigator who is a leader in their own domain and can bring their commitment and experience in EDI to advance the efforts already underway at HCI to create consistent, ongoing meaningful changes that result in a more just, equitable, and inclusive environment. The position requires strong leadership and communication skills, the ability to lead and coordinate EDI initiatives, including the Programs to Enhance Diversity (PED) of the Cancer Center Support Grant and a vision on how to foster EDI as an integral component of all aspects of the Cancer Center. The HCI Senior Director for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion will report directly to the Executive Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and to the Executive Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at HCI, and will have a key role in the development of HCI’s strategic plan. He/she/they will work closely with all HCI senior directors and clinical leaders, to ensure that EDI principles are integrated into all aspects of HCIs mission, operations, and strategic plans in order to make lasting change.
The new Senior Director will be appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. Founded in 1970, the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is one of the oldest and most established family medicine departments in the country. Currently ranked #3 in NIH funding in the 2021 Blueridge Report, the department comprises four complimentary divisions: Public Health, Physician Assistant Studies, Family Medicine, and Occupational and Environmental Health. Faculty appointments and/or affiliations with other departments can be facilitated as needed.
At HCI, the Senior Director for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion will: 1) Lead the PED efforts of the cancer center, in close collaboration with the Cancer Center Director and the Executive Director of EDI 2) help coordinate Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion efforts for the Comprehensive Cancer Center; 3) Work closely with Senior Directors for Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) and Cancer Research Training, Education, and Coordination (CRETC) to implement PED efforts in the cancer center ; 4) Work closely with HCI Clinical Research leaders to advance their understanding of the disparities our communities face and guide them in utilizing culturally appropriate strategies for community engagement and participation in all parts of research; 5) Work closely with other HCI Senior Directors and Disease Centers to advance the understanding of integration of PED in all domains of research and clinical care; 6) Develop goals, and criteria for monitoring and evaluating PED initiatives.

Our integrated health system and HCI’s participation in the ORIEN network of leading cancer centers provide opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations in basic and translational laboratory-based cancer research, epidemiology, and biostatistics, as well as population-based studies of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers and outcomes. In addition, the University of Utah and HCI are home to superb shared resources, such as the Utah Population Database with more than 16 million records linking genealogies, health records, and vital statistics, as well as the Utah Cancer Registry which is a long-standing and preeminent SEER site. HCI and University of Utah Health provide access to state-of-the-art equipment and services through exceptional core facilities (see www.cores.utah.edu), including genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, a GMP-certified cell therapy and regenerative medicine facility, and a comprehensive biospecimen repository, which serve to enhance both discovery and translational science.
Position Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: 1) PhD, MD, or equivalent with appropriate post-doctoral training; 2) Must have an established track record of scientific accomplishments with extramural peer-reviewed NIH funding; 3) Should have demonstrated administrative or leadership experience; 4) Must be eligible to work in the US.
