Job Description

The Design Bureau at the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking to hire a new entry-level team member that will support our efforts of designing innovative highway and construction improvement projects. This position focuses on providing hands-on experience under the mentorship of senior designers and engineers while getting to assist in the development of highway and bridge concepts.

Your typical day in this role will include:

  • Producing highway and bridge concept statements that are consistent with Iowa DOT design guidance
  • Participating in team decisions that effectively balance mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost, and long-term maintenance
  • Generating bid items and material quantities to determine construction costs
  • Assisting in producing roadway geometric features including vertical and horizontal highway alignments
  • Generating crash history information
  • Submitting traffic and bridge requests

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent), and experience equal to two years of full-time work in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, or construction inspection.
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in math, engineering, or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited vocational program in engineering technology, design drafting, engineering survey, soils survey, land survey, construction inspection, or cartography.
