Position Description

Harvard Medical School (HMS) is at the vanguard of biological and biomedical research, and scientific investigators at HMS and affiliate hospitals continue to push the envelope, developing novel approaches to the study of biological processes both at the bench and via computational methods. The HMS Department of Information Technology, a key partner in supporting such computation-based research, has an exciting opportunity for a Data Center Engineer interested in supporting several 24 x 7 365-days active data centers.

The Data Center Engineer will be responsible for all basic day-to-day functions within a live production environment. In particular, the position will be responsible for day-to-day operations including equipment intake and installation. The engineer will also maintain cleanliness and security throughout the facilities. In addition, they will assist the other teams as needed to maintain maximum functionality of equipment within the environment.

The position’s primary focus is to assist senior data center staff with any requests that arise throughout the day. This role may be a pathway into opportunities for advancement to senior data center engineer.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Intake and document all deliveries and maintain inventory
  • Install and decommission all hardware requested by the HMS community
  • Cable and label all infrastructure wiring while maintaining strict standards to ensure future troubleshooting processes can be performed with less difficulty
  • Keep DCIM software up to date with active equipment
  • Respond to any incidents regarding critical operations, document, communicate and resolve these issues as quickly and safely as possible
  • Support vendor visits by preparing necessary items beforehand to ensure successful service calls
  • Keep all software up to date and configured properly
  • Document procedures and store all documentation
  • Maintain asset tag tracking for the finance group
  • Keep track of all UPS systems software on campus and monitor all power equipment throughout the HMS campuses
  • Participate in rotating on-call schedule
  • Maintain data center areas cleanliness and security.
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Willingness to cover several sites as needed
  • Experience working in an IT environment, preferably in critical operations
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Understanding of cabling and wiring best practices
  • Knowledge of storage, network, and server hardware
  • Ability to work on a ladder for extended periods of time
  • Troubleshooting skills in relation to computer hardware
  • Understanding of security protocols regarding site and equipment access

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Physical Requirements

Capable of lifting 50 lbs

Working Conditions

Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours, and may be called during off hours

This is an in-person position based on our campus in Boston.

This is a two-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
