This position was located within the Department of Public Safety (DPS) but transferred to the Department of Adult Correction on January 1, 2023.

The standardized annual salary for this position is $43,654 dependent upon fund availability and OSHR approval.

Reporting to the Correctional Food Service Supervisor II, this position is responsible for performing the first-line supervisory work in a medium custody facility, providing supervision and custody of offenders in their assigned food preparation and food service work areas. Job responsibilities include; but are not limited to, the following:

  • Overseeing offender workers engaged in a variety of activities in food production including cooking, baking, and serving food to the offender population.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Inputting and comprehending computer data.
  • Securing and maintaining equipment.
  • Reading, comprehending, and calculating menus.
  • Observing to ensure sanitary food handling practices.
  • Understanding food nutritional values.
  • Inventorying and rotating stock.
  • Completing CPR; firearms; and unarmed self-defense training.

This is a full-time position working rotating shifts with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC06. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC):
DAC is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance and Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs and Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation and Reentry.

About Pender Correctional Institution:
Pender Correctional Institution is located in Burgaw, North Carolina and houses up to 750 male offenders in a medium custody facility.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in institutional food preparation and food services, in management of a commercial food service operations

As a Correctional Officer

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment: High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in institutional food preparation and food services, in management of a commercial food service operations
Or
As a Correctional Officer
Or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Pay: $32,460.00 - $56,806.00 per year
