CORE Program Coordinator Job at The University of Virginia

We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Program Coordinator to work with a newly developing CORE (Community for Opportunities in Research Excellence) Scholars Program. This program is part of the Driving Change Initiative supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), which aims to foster lasting culture change so that undergraduates from all backgrounds can excel in STEM. Overall duties for the Program Coordinator may include support related to student advising, counseling, and engagement, as well as program development, management, and assessment. Primary responsibilities focus on developing and implementing a four-year plan for the CORE Scholars Program. The position also includes significant engagement with the Scholars and the collaborative formulation of strategies for their success. Additionally, candidates will be expected to serve as an advocate and champion for students within the program, which includes a diverse student body.

Specific responsibilities will include:
  • Developing and coordinating CORE Scholar programming
  • Researching and implementing high impact practices for student retention, engagement, and success, as well as tracking and assessing program success
  • Collaborating with stakeholders across Grounds to connect students with academic and professional opportunities including internships, research experiences, and study abroad
  • Managing CORE Scholar budget



Qualified candidates are required to have a master's degree, with a preference for degrees in student affairs, higher education, or counseling, and at least three years of experience in higher education. Additional experience can substitute for master’s degree requirement.

The ideal candidate will be both self-directed and highly collaborative, a creative problem-solver, and someone with a demonstrated commitment to student development, underrepresented student populations, and knowledge of high impact practices related to student success. A successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate evidence of collaboration across program boundaries, which is expected to be a critical component of the role.

The Program Coordinator will work directly with the Faculty Director of the CORE Scholars Program and collaborate with staff working with the associate provost for undergraduate education and members of the UVA-HHMI Driving Change team. The position will report to Katie Densberger, Director of Academic Student Support.

This is an in-person position, located in Charlottesville, VA. The ability to work some evenings and weekends is required to support events for the program.

This position will remain open until filled. Review of Applicants will begin April 3, 2023.

The anticipated start date is July 31, 2023. Anticipated Hiring Range is $60,000 - $70,000, commensurate with education and experience.

This position is a restricted position, and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. Anticipated length based on current funding is 4 years. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
