The Department of Biology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking an Undergraduate Teaching laboratory coordinator who will work closely with the biology curriculum committee, and Biology Department administration to manage the Biology teaching laboratories. This includes training and management of graduate teaching assistants employed to lead laboratory activities and discussions, supervision of laboratory staff, and oversight of the maintenance of stocks and supplies necessary for the undergraduate laboratory exercises. The Undergraduate Teaching laboratory coordinator will also 1.) assist Biology Administration and Biology Academic Committee in making teaching assistantship assignments. 2.) Assist Biology administration and Biology fiscal with setting and maintaining course material & supply and equipment budgets. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Management of Introductory Biology labs (BSC 2005L, 2010L, 2011L)

Specific duties include:

  • Determines and maintains laboratory curricula and content.
  • Assigns Graduate Teaching Assistants to individual lab sections.
  • Trains TAs to run laboratory exercises - in association with BSC Lab Manager.
  • Designs and provides complete and detailed notes on exercises for Graduate teaching assistants.
  • Holds weekly meetings with the Graduate Teaching Assistants to discuss issues, schedules and upcoming laboratory exercises.
  • Assesses and documents graduate teaching assistant performance.
  • Adjudicates student issues and conflicts.
  • Designs/Writes/Edits/Revises lab manuals for BSC lab courses
  • Maintains stocks and supplies necessary for the undergraduate laboratory exercises with assistance from the with BSC Lab Manager.

Supervises lab staff for all departmental teaching laboratories and approves time for OPS lab staff and assistants.

Assists Biology Administration and the Biology Academic Committee in creating the schedule of courses offered each semester. Assists the Program Assistant in scheduling of all teaching lab rooms in the Schedule of Courses, assists the Academic Committee and Biology Administration in assigning Graduate Teaching Assistants to courses.

Assists Biology Administration and Biology Fiscal with management of the Material & Supply fees and Equipment fee budgets for all Biology courses.

Serves as a member of the Academic Committee and the Curriculum Committee.

Oversees IACUC, ACS, and EH&S permissions and requirements for all teaching laboratories and associated spaces.



Expected Salary:

The salary is $50,000 - $60,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.



Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or related field, although exceptional candidates with a BSc. in the Biological Sciences or related field will be considered. Teaching experience (classroom or laboratory). Ability to communicate effectively.

Experience with teaching in a laboratory setting, ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments, experience managing and maintaining laboratory supply stocks (ordering/purchasing and inventory).
