Job Title: Cook

FLSA Status: Non-exempt, Part-time Hours: 30 hours or less per week

Position Summary:

Prepare and deliver breakfast, lunch and snacks in a timely manner while maintaining sanitation, health, and safety standards in all work areas. Demonstrate the Y’s mission and core values at all times.

Essential Duties:

  • Operate large-volume cooking equipment and dishwasher.
  • Prepare adequate amounts of breakfast, lunch and snack as ordered by each lead teacher, Responsible for getting a count from each class of how many kids to prepare meals or on a daily basis. Prepare substitute meals for kids with allergies as instructed by supervisor.
  • Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas and cooking utensils; personal grooming; and how to properly prepare food to avoid food-borne illnesses.
  • Maintain the kitchen's inventory, by notifying supervisor of any item that the stock is low to make sure that ingredients are always on hand without any going to waste, and making sure everything is stored properly for safety and space efficiency. Accept and verify delivery of supplies. The food will need to be organized after it is delivered
  • Must be able to multi task, especially when cooking several things at once.
  • Cooks must understand proper preparation technique, memorize certain recipes to ensure consistency, know how to time dishes when they must be completed at once, know how to cook in bulk without generating waste and know how to use commercial kitchen equipment.
  • The cook plans the monthly menu with their supervisor and adheres to the approved menu.
  • Responsible for cleaning the kitchen between meals. This might include putting away food, washing pots and pans, utensils, sippy cups and plates, and cleaning counters, tables, stove, dishwasher, and pantry.
  • Children can be loud and demanding. You will need patience when dealing with them and should respond to their requests in a kind and loving manner. Understand that cleaning up spills will be a given when working with children.
  • Uphold all YMCA policies and procedures including those related to safety and risk management and attend all mandatory YMCA and State trainings.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED or be working towards a high school diploma
  • Must be organized and detail oriented.
  • CPR/First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Trainings.
  • Previous experience cooking in a kitchen.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be bending, stooping and kneeling at times. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 40 pounds.
