We are looking for a Controller. The candidate will be responsible for all things accounting, finance and reporting within a growing and dynamic home services business. The job reports directly into the Company's President and Chief Operating Officer. It isn't your typical accounting role as it's so much more than just the debits and credits (although these are super important!). You'll be expected to be a true business partner to our service managers along with executive and corporate leadership. With close to 500 technicians on the road, there's always something new and exciting happening. This is a job for a problem solver and for one of those rare left-brained accountants!

Responsibilities:

II. Accounting Operations

  • Oversee four functional teams (general ledger / accounts payable, payroll, collections and accounts receivable / cash receipts) with team managers as direct reports; total accounting staff of 13
  • Ensure that all teams meet their daily, weekly and monthly task deadlines
  • Decision maker for escalated concerns (i.e. account coding, job review, payment requests, etc.)
  • Maintain the Company's chart of accounts, making modifications as required
  • Build upon existing, while also developing new accounting policies and procedures as required
  • Interface and consult with accounting staff for the owner's affiliate business entities (equipment leasing, real estate and hospitality)

II. Business and Process Management:

  • Fully learn and understand the Company's operations and their various business units and revenue streams
  • Be the point person for operational questions with regards to how they intersect with accounting principles and workflows
  • Partner with the President in management of the Company's banking, insurance and vendor relationships, with primary ownership of all accounting and finance related vendors
  • Develop business relationships with our operational leaders and service management; plan for quarterly visits to each of our field offices in Hyattsville, Baltimore, Charlottesville, Norfolk and Richmond
  • Work with operational management to develop new and improve existing processes which support our service departments while also empowering the accounting team to get their jobs done efficiently and effectively
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings and/or improved efficiency in our strategic selection of vendor partners across the organization

III. Financial Reporting and Assurance:

  • Publish monthly financial statement reporting package for executive leadership and service managers leveraging existing dashboards within the Company's ERP, Sage Intacct
  • Be able to articulate and comment on any actual vs. budget variances in both the overall Company results and individual departmental results
  • Direct and manage any required regulatory filings (i.e. corporate registrations, business licenses, personal property taxes, etc.)
  • Oversee the Company's annual insurance audits (workers compensation, general liability, automobile, etc.)
  • Work, in conjunction with the Director of Human Resources, to faciliate the Company's annual 401(k) audit
  • Responsible for the successful completion of the Company's annual external review; primary point of contact for all external accountant inquiries
  • Responsible for, in consultation with external tax accountants, the filing of the organization's income tax returns

Technical Requirements:

  • 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in an accounting leadership role
  • Excellent working knowledge of US GAAP with a CPA designation highly preferred
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Expert level Excel skills
  • Experience working with a cloud-based ERP system, with bonus points for Sage Intacct experience
  • Super bonus points for experience with ServiceTitan
  • Strong level of curiosity with a belief that no task is either above or beneath you
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening satisfactory to Michael and Son Services
