Construction Inspector I: This is technical field work in the construction inspection of Water Resources construction projects to ensure compliance with contractual design and engineering specifications. Work involves inspecting assigned jobs and responsibility for proper compliance with specifications and regulations relating to workmanship and materials. Work also involves maintaining records of daily activities and construction projects such as pipe laying, requesting tests of construction materials, other related construction activities for specification conformance, and interacting and working closely with department engineering and design staff.

Construction Inspector II: This is important technical field work inspecting the more complex and technical Water Resources construction projects to ensure compliance with contractual design, specification, City ordinances, and other contractual obligations.

A selected candidate will inspect assigned jobs and is responsible for proper compliance with specifications and regulations relating to workmanship and materials. Work involves maintaining records of daily activities and construction projects such as pipe laying, requesting tests of construction materials and other related construction activities for specification conformance; interacting and working closely with department engineer, design staff and important contacts with contractors, officials of the County, State and Federal governments, other City departments and the public. Projects inspected are generally of a more complex and costly nature, requiring a high level of technical knowledge, expertise, decision-making, personal initiative, judgment, and discretion.

Salary: $23.48 - $35.70 Hourly**

**The starting salary and selection into a Construction Inspector position, at level I or level II will depend upon qualifications and experience. The entry level pay for Inspector II is $24.92 Hourly.

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants Must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Have at least one (1) year of journeyman, contractor, and/or inspection experience, preferably on public works construction projects such as sanitary pipe lining, buildings, utilities, an upcoming sanitary dig and replace project, and/or similar projects.
  • Have knowledge of standards for materials and workmanship in construction projects.
  • Have the ability to read engineering plans and specifications related to civil engineering projects.
  • Have some understanding of surveying practices and how they relate to construction.
  • Are able to prepare detailed field reports and maintain daily records.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.
  • At the Construction Inspector II level, meet the above qualifications and the following qualifications:

o Have at least three (3) years of journeyman, contractor, and/or inspection experience, preferably on public works construction projects such as sanitary pipe lining, buildings, utilities, an upcoming sanitary dig and replace project, and/or similar projects.

o Are able to read engineering plans and specifications related to civil engineering projects.

o Have some knowledge of contract administration, construction management, and estimating costs for construction materials, labor, and equipment.

o Have basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.

o Are able to make complex, difficult inspections.

o Have considerable knowledge of surveying practices and techniques related to construction.

o Have considerable knowledge of standards for materials and workmanship in construction projects.


Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Have a valid wastewater collection and/or water distribution license.
  • Have considerable knowledge of surveying practices and techniques related to construction.
  • Have experience in the construction and installation of potable water and/or wastewater pipes and utilities.
  • Are able to prepare detailed field reports and maintain daily records.
