Brief Description

Job Summary

Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, creates, coordinates, and delivers community center and other recreation programs, activities and events as assigned. Ensures program facilities are properly maintained, as well as, setups and breakdowns tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies as needed. Assists in leading and coordinating seasonal and temporary personnel and volunteers. Connects with neighborhood associations, non-profit agencies, and organizations to foster community involvement. Track and maintain participant and program records as needed.

  • Plan, Coordinate, & Evaluate Recreation Programs:
    Organize, develop, and coordinate diverse recreation programs, including but not limited to: summer and holiday camp programs, afterschool programs, arts programs, senior adult programs, teen programs, and special events. Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, recommend changes and implement management decisions. Transports participants in a non-commercial bus to various sites throughout the city to participate in recreation activities. Assist in training, leading, and coordinating seasonal and temporary personnel and volunteers in the performance of shared responsibilities. As needed, participate in the interviewing and selection process for seasonal and temporary personnel and volunteers. Perform administrative tasks, such as attending and scheduling meetings, preparing reports, and maintaining records. May be responsible for handling or processing of program payments and monitoring nominal expenditures.

  • Monitor & Inspect Facilities:
    Monitor and inspect fields, facilities, supplies, and equipment for safety and security. Ensure that equipment is inventoried and maintained on a regular basis. Notify maintenance personnel as needed for facility or equipment repairs. Setup and breakdown program and facility supplies and equipment as well tables and chairs.

  • Serve as a Liaison to the Neighborhood, Community Partners, & Internal Groups:
    Serve as a liaison and resource for community agencies and other organizations and stakeholders. Perform community outreach to promote recreation programs and stimulate interest in City offerings. Receive and respond to questions and concerns from the community. Identify potential issues and resolve problems within level of authority referring to supervisor as appropriate.

  • Maintain Records:
    Track and maintain records of daily community center drop-in participants, program participants, facility rentals, etc. Prepare and summarize data for quarterly and yearly reports as needed. As needed, assist in the collection of data in support of departmental budget reports.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

  • Associate degree in sports management, parks and recreation management, or a related field.

  • Over one (1) year of experience in recreation management and/or education.

  • Any equivalent combination of directly related education, training, and experience with progressive responsibility in recreation, sports management, education, physical education, or a related field.

  • Must have or obtain CPR & First Aid certifications within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related field.

Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.

  • Recreation programming principles and best practices.

  • Trends and current developments in recreation planning.

  • Proper care and safety practices of recreation, facility, sports field equipment, materials, and supplies.

  • Principles and practices for providing high-level customer service.

  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.

Ability to:

  • Plan and deliver comprehensive and diverse recreation programming for all ages, abilities, and interests.

  • Assist in leading and coordinating seasonal and/or temporary staff and volunteers, including training, work planning, organizing, and scheduling.

  • Collaborate with outside nonprofit organizations to accomplish mission and goals.

  • Perform minor maintenance duties.

  • Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.

  • Maintain order and safety in crowded and noisy environments.

  • Administer first aid, CPR, and AED, as needed.

  • Handle and balance of cash payments.

  • Perform work as directed in an efficient, effective, safe, and timely manner.

  • Respond appropriately to changing situations.

  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.

  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships.

  • Learn and effectively use City recreation programming software.

  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.

  • Speak effectively in public.

  • Read, comprehend, and apply knowledge of rules, regulations and procedures as they relate to City recreational programs.

  • Use, operate, and maintain a variety of operational, custodial, and audio-visual equipment.

  • Drive a City non-commercial vehicle to transport recreation participants.

  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.

Working Conditions

Primary Work Location:
Community Center (includes indoor and outdoor recreation facilities).

Protective Equipment Required:
Closed-toe shoes, gloves, etc.

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:
Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures and humidity.

Physical Demands:
Continuously requires vision and hearing. Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, balancing, bending, twisting, and talking. Occasionally requires fine dexterity, handling, climbing, crouching, and foot controls. Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.

Mental Demands:
Frequently requires change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, working closely with others as part of a team, and a noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally involves time pressures, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, tedious or exacting work, and emergency situations.
