Pay Range

$104,370 - $135,192 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Communications Specialist (Writer/Editor). We are looking for exceptionally talented, creative, and strategic communication experts with relevant scientific or technical experience and skills in HTML, LaTeX, and online training tools, such as Jupyter/Python notebooks, or a strong desire to learn these skills. In this role, you will use your skills to create content for online training tools for technical audiences. The selected candidate will work closely with all levels of management, program leaders, scientists, and administrative staff to communicate programmatic strategies, highly complex scientific research, and technology information to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences, primarily supporting proposals seeking funding for research and development. This position is in the Technical Information Department (TID) and will be matrixed to the ACES program in the Global Security (GS) Principal Directorate.

In this role you will…

  • Write, rewrite, and/or edit complex technical, and possibly sensitive information into accurate and engaging products across various audiences and media.
  • Manage and maintain web-based training tools, including Jupyter software training notebooks, for a complex multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop original content, provide writing and editing services, and coordinate the design of templates, documents, web assets, and graphic displays.
  • Provide quality checks for production assignments through interactions with the Lab’s in-house print shop, designers, and/or multimedia professionals on complex productions jobs.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts, various reviewers, and Office of Classification and Export Control to evaluate and determine the classification level of publications.
  • Coordinate complex communications projects with multiple contributors who may be affiliated with other government, international, or commercial entities. Collaborate with senior managers, technical team members, and colleagues in TID to meet project and programmatic objectives.
  • Help define communications strategies, messaging, and key deliverables for a variety of short- and long-term projects; participate in all aspects of training production from concept through distribution.
  • Develop and implement key deliverables for high-level strategic communications, managing complex projects including schedules and coordinating the work of others.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access within a reasonable amount of time after joining the laboratory.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific field or English, communications, technical communications, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in technical communications.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence, etc), and online training tools, such as Jupyter/Python notebooks; HTML; LaTeX; or a strong ability to quickly learn new tools.
  • Experience developing training materials, such as web-based training.
  • Experience as a writer/editor, planning, developing, organizing, and writing content effectively across various types of communication platforms, including web and digital copywriting, across multiple scientific and/or technical communication areas.
  • Self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight, shifting schedules, including effective interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience using editorial style conventions as well as communication practices and standards.
  • Expertise in the theory and techniques of high-quality technical communication for both printed and web-based publications.
  • Experience collaborating with senior managers, clients, team members, peers, and stakeholders to meet organizational objectives.
  • Experience leading production and technical writing and editing assignments. Understands the costs, processes, timelines, and specifications involved in various print and electronic delivery methods.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree in Physics, Computer, Science, engineering, or other scientific area, English, communications, journalism, media relations.
  • Thorough understanding of LLNL’s primary mission of ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the nuclear stockpile.
  • Active Q-clearance and approved to access SCI information prior to start date.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
