NCLA is seeking a motivated Communications Specialist who can communicate our organization’s passion for defending civil liberties from administrative agency abuse of power. This is an entry-level position reporting to the Communications and Marketing Director. We are located in Dupont Circle in the heart of Washington, DC. As a member of our Communications & Marketing team, you will create quality communications and marketing content in a variety of formats, such as press releases, blogs, web, and collateral for distribution. Position Title: Communications Specialist

Department: Communications & Marketing

Report to: Director of Communications & Marketing

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft press releases in a timely manner with attention to accuracy and grammar
  • Proof and edit written communications
  • Provide insightful, creative, liberty-minded written materials reflecting cohesive & consistent NCLA “voice” on a regular basis in a variety of formats
  • Research, write, and achieve the highest level of quality ensuring consistency with corporate identity and brand messaging
  • Draft promotional, advertising, and fundraising material
  • Draft/edit weekly blogs, emails, and website material
  • Edit editorials for staff members as needed
  • Meet deadlines for assignments
  • Coordinate interviews with media outlets

Educational or Certification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications preferred

Experience Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of experience in professional writing
  • Experience writing promotional or marketing copy
  • Experience writing for a digital/web audience
  • Experience handling media interview requests is a plus
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and take on multiple tasks
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required/Preferred

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Basic Knowledge of Word Press CMS, Meltwater, Zoom & Skype is a must
  • Must be able to handle deadlines under pressure and prioritize accordingly
  • Must have a keen eye for detail
  • Candidate must demonstrate time management skills
  • Possess a positive, service-oriented attitude and be a proven team player
  • Marketing and/or non-profit organization experience is a plus and strongly desired, but not required for this role
  • Knowledge/familiarity of law and the topic of the Administrative State desired, but not required for this role

Other Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
