Salary Range: $4,807 - $6,466 Monthly

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule
with office space provided.
Telework schedule to be determined between the incumbent and the position supervisor.

The Headquarters Communications unit is searching for a dynamic and professional Communications Consultant 3 (CC3) to join their team.

As the CC3, you would be an essential addition to the Communications unit and to the Department. This is the perfect opportunity to utilize your strong conversation and relationship skills as you communicate with diverse stakeholders, build, and maintain professional relationships, while being the front-face for the Department of Corrections. The CC3 position is responsible for creating media releases, communicating, and creating awareness with a variety of stakeholders on public safety efforts, and providing technical writing expertise.

The incumbent must have the ability to think quickly and pivot to urgent matters while providing consistent, accurate information to inquiring stakeholders. You would also utilize a fair amount of patience and calmness in this role while communicating with stakeholders.

Duties

As a CC3 , some of your duties will include:
  • Research and Produce Communication Materials
    • Research and draft a variety of publications, including but limited to:
      • Media releases
      • Advisories
      • Newsletter articles
      • Talking points
      • Legislative testimony
      • Training material
      • Brochures
      • Background papers
      • PowerPoint presentations
      • Agency letters
      • Memoranda
      • Speeches
    • Creates multi-media products, including video.
    • Creates Podcasts and infographics.
    • Takes and edits photos, as needed.
  • Assist Media Sources and Coordinate Complex External Messaging
    • Responds directly to phone calls and emails from media outlets.
    • Coordinate with internal contact to ensure facts and inquire for more detail on information.
    • Advises the external communications/media relations manager and other communications staff on the development of complex communications strategies, practices, policies, key messages, response and strategies for providing timely and accurate information about the department to the media and the public.
    • Research policies to ensure accuracy in procedures.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major field of study in communications, journalism, English, and/or related field of study from an accredited institution recognized by the US Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
AND
  • At least one year of professional experience in a communications-related position.
  • At least one year of professional experience creating and editing video.
  • At least one year of professional experience creating content and editing for social media, website, or other forms of multimedia publications.
  • At least one year experience with advanced editing experience in a communications unit setting i.e., field of journalism, communications team at a state agency, etc.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in writing and editing.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in applying AP style.
  • Skilled ability to perform quality work on tight deadlines amid distractions.
  • Ability to understand complex ideas and simplify for mass consumption.
  • Multi-tasking capabilities.
Combined education and experience will also be considered for the position.

What will make your application stand out (preferred qualifications):
  • At least one year of professional experience in a communications-related position.
  • Diversified knowledge of print, broadcast, and electronic/new media practices.
  • Understanding of social media platforms.
  • Developing level of proficiency in SharePoint.
  • Expert level of proficiency with Photoshop and other similar software.
  • Advanced level of proficiency with Illustrator.
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Outlook.
  • Knowledge of criminal justice, including prisons, community corrections, and work release. Experience in communicating through various media formats, including websites, photos, and videos.
  • Experience in government agency or public relations agency.

Telework Details
The position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington, using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at the time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have an available “drop in” area; however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
