Licenses or Certifications:
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
  • One of the following:
    • R5 Residential Combination Inspection Certificate or all certifications that make up the equivalent R5 combination: Residential Building Inspector, Residential Electrical Inspector, Residential Mechanical Inspector and Residential Plumbing Inspector
    • C8 Combination Inspection Certificate or all certifications that make up the equivalent of the C8 combination: Residential Building Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector, Residential Mechanical Inspector, Commercial Mechanical Inspector, Residential Electrical Inspector, Commercial Electrical Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector and Commercial Plumbing Inspector

Notes to Applicants

The Development Services Department ( DSD ) assists homeowners, business owners, and contractors when they build, demolish, remodel or perform any type of construction to ensure compliance with applicable city and building codes.

DSD is seeking a Combination Inspector or Inspector C certified Residential Building Inspector to provide inspection activities for the city as it pertains to the Residential Building Code.

This Inspector position will be responsible for conducting residential combination inspections in the City of Austin’s full purpose, limited purpose and extraterritorial jurisdictions. The inspector must have the ability to deal with multiple customers, interpret codes, create daily routes for inspections and prioritize their importance. This position requires a high level of communication, working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

This position is eligible for a $3000.00 Retention Incentive Bonus .

Inspector C: $27.90 – $34.17
Combination Inspector: $28.71 – $35.88

Criminal Background checks may be required to obtain certifications for this position.

Driving Requirement: This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
  • Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners Inspector, Journeyman, or Master Plumbing License.
  • Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Journeyman, or Master Electrician License.
  • International Code Council (ICC) E1 Electrical Certification.
  • International Code Council (ICC) R5 Combination Inspector.
  • Experience reading and reviewing engineering drawings.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
