The City of North Las Vegas announces a posting to create an eligibility list and to fill four (4) vacancies for
the classification of Code Enforcement Specialist. Current vacancies are in the Land Development and Community Services Department. The eligibility list will be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification, for up to one hundred twenty (120) days.


NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES: Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, non-probationary employees successfully completing the qualification assessment process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to one hundred and twenty (120) days.


The 2-week internal posting notice/period is incorporated in this job announcement. If the vacancies
are not filled through promotion by full-time employees, the next opportunity for placement will be
to hire qualified part-time/temporary employees and external candidates.

  • Shift work required. The schedule consists of Monday through Thursday 8am to 6pm.
  • Pay considerations. The starting hourly pay for this position is $24.61 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range; no exceptions. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
  • Working Conditions - Work is performed outdoors up to 80% of the time with exposure to all types of weather conditions. May be exposed to hazards working in or on public or private property, uneven terrains, exposure to moving objects and vehicles, sharp objects, pinch points, dust, noise, vibration, extreme heat and cold, slippery surfaces, toxic and caustic chemicals. May be exposed to hostile environments while confronting individuals, a possible risk to personal safety. Wearing uniformed clothing, and may be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in the performance of duties.
  • Selection Process. Oral Panel Interview: 100% Passing Score 70%

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will need to be able to handle constant change of focus in different tasks assigned. The candidate will need to have dependability, reliability and responsibility, timeliness, professionalism, willingness to learn. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, strong customer service skills, and basic computer knowledge. The ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive complex and confrontational issues and situations.


The Role

This position is an entry-level position to the Code Enforcement Officer class. This position differs from a Code Enforcement Officer by the difficulty of work assignments and enforcement capabilities. Enforcement and educational work will primarily focus on violations related to public nuisance, blight, zoning, graffiti, illegal signage and non-permitted structures; and perform field surveys for organized educational neighborhood cleanups and enforcement sweeps to ensure the safety, protection and visual enhancement of the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

  • One (1) year of full-time work experience, which require the interpretation, explanation and enforcement of varied codes and regulations.

  • Preferred: One (1) year of full-time work experience, which required the inspection of properties for violations related to zoning, graffiti, nuisance, building, or other related code violations or one (1) year full-time experience and a valid Zoning Officer and/or Property Housing and Maintenance Inspector certification through the International Code Council or the American Association of Code Enforcement is preferred.

  • Equivalency: May substitute any combination of equivalent education, certification or work experience as minimum qualifications required.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record with the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.
