Position Summary:

The Child Advocate position provides direct support to children affected by child abuse. The Child Advocate interacts with and supervises children from birth to 18 while they are in the Center’s Playroom including providing meals and snacks, clothing, and personal hygiene. The Child Advocate also serves as a liaison between the partners at the Center and the families or caretakers of the children. This position is also responsible for supervising volunteers while in the playroom and identifying activities for volunteers to complete at the Center.

This position does not have direct reports.

Essential Functions:

Playroom Coverage

  • Coordinates with Childhelp Victim Advocacy and Clinical teams to provide developmentally appropriate care and activities for the children in the Playroom.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships and communication with the Center’s partner agencies, including the Phoenix Police Department, Child Protective Services, Department of Child Safety Office of Child Welfare Investigation and Phoenix Children’s Hospital
  • Provides an introduction to the playroom for children including checking children in, reviewing playroom rules, and showing the children around the playroom.
  • Monitors children to ensure safety and security while in the playroom
  • Interacts and engages with children, and facilitates 1-1 and group activities that are developmentally appropriate and trauma informed
  • Assists volunteers with developmentally appropriate child interactions and in maintaining a neat and organized play environment by performing light cleaning duties and assisting with organization of the playroom
  • Prepares meals for children visiting the Center
  • Assists with toy, clothing, and backpack donations that are provided to children who visit the Center
  • Prepares activities for children who are served by the Playroom and for children who remain in the lobby.
  • Responsible for completing incident reports adhering to the Childhelp policies and state laws and regulations.
  • Maintains a regular cleaning routine of the Playroom

Administrative Support

  • Tracks on a daily basis the children served in the Playroom, entering data in the Center’s electronic health record
  • Tracks donations coming to the Center including clothing and toys and communicates with supervisor when toy and clothing stock are low
  • Completes weekly record of food distributed to children; completes inventory of available food; and communicates with supervisor when food stock is low.
  • Adheres to policies for food storage, handling and preparation according to state and grant partner standards and procedures
  • Supports the administrative team with coverage of reception, checking families and children in and supporting new cases coming to the Center
  • Participates in regular professional development in the areas of child development, trauma informed care, developmentally appropriate practice, child abuse and neglect

Miscellaneous

Performs other duties, as assigned by the Director and Supervisor

Requirements

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Understanding

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited academic college or university
  • Possess CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Clear fingerprint background screening through the Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Index
