You are:
An experienced mid- to large-sized hospital operations executive, ready to join a collaborative and consensus-driven leadership team as Chief Operating Officer, with latitude for decision making.

The opportunity:
The COO oversees operations of Presbyterian's flagship hospital - Presbyterian Hospital, acute care facility with 562 licensed beds (600 anticipated within two years). In addition, oversees operations for Kaseman Hospital, acute care facility with 85 beds (primarily behavioral health and emergency department services).

This key operations leader works collaboratively with the Chief Hospital Executive, Chief Nurse Executive and Chief Medical Officer.

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Provides administrative direction, evaluation, and coordination of the functions and activities for day to day operations for assigned clinical and non-clinical departments for these two campuses - ensuring that staff deliver high quality, cost effective care and services.
  • Focuses on nuances of multiple hospital operations including the facilitation and optimization of patient flow processes, way finding, and campus master planning, construction projects and expansion initiatives.
  • Drives strategy and process improvements, with focus on innovative care delivery, technology, and operational models designed to improve clinical services, outcomes, patient throughput and patient safety.
  • Coordinates with and communicates effectively with various campus leaders including Directors and Nursing leaders.
  • Responsible for oversight of several key hospital contract relationships for Central Delivery System.

Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in related field; MBA or MHA preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years of leadership in hospital operations required within a medium or large acute care facility.
  • Prior experience at a comparable level (e.g., Facility Executive Director, VP or COO) is highly preferred.
  • Multi-hospital experience preferred.
  • LEAN / Process Improvement experience desired.
Responsibilities:
  • Assists Hospital Chief Executive with facility compliance with PHS/hospital established policies, State licensure and other regulatory standards; safety, environmental, and legal requirements; infection control policies and procedures.
  • Manage the implementation for major strategic, clinical and/or operational initiatives, collaborating with Hospital Chief Executive, Chief Nursing Executive, and site leadership.
  • Provides leadership to multi-campus clinical ancillary areas, including Patient Transportation for Presbyterian Hospital and Kaseman Hospital campuses.
  • Oversees and submits PH and Kaseman capital budget, as well as operating budget, revenue and expenditures for assigned departments. Analyzes and reports fiscal activity and makes recommendations for overall hospital budget with collaborating leadership.


  • Clearly understands and communicates scorecard metrics and targets to the organization.
  • Attend applicable Board, Medical Staff, Senior Leadership, and associated meetings.
  • Manages and develops employees. Communicate expectations, develop leaders, and advance the organization to meet needs and strategic priorities that are current and/or anticipated.


  • Creates a climate for employee engagement, staff retention, and high performance. Establishes direction, mentors employees, provides feedback and builds commitment.
  • Establish trust and emerge as a leader in key initiatives and strategies to continually improve the quality and level of service provided.
  • Accountable for positive campus identity, consistent with PHS brand.
  • Assists in developing campus/multi-campus policies, procedures and work flows.
  • Serves as a key leader accountable for patient experience in assigned areas.
  • Participates in Administrator on Call rotations and is fully trained in Emergency Management and Hospital incident command management.
  • Serves and assists all departments and service lines in coordination and optimization of patient flow A3 work.
  • Assists in effective multi-campus planning, growth and development, including way finding and patient throughput.
  • Participates in process to prioritize medical program requests for resources at the campus.
  • Consistently carries out PHS system policy and procedures and represents PHS actively and positively within the local community, as well as actively represent the local community needs to PHS.
  • Maintains positive morale, safety, and general well-being of the workforce through the consistent and standard application of PHS policies and procedures.
  • Effectively communicates the PHS vision, values, purpose and strategies to the various constituencies in the local community.
  • Participates in, plans and leads projects and meetings as assigned.
