Overview:

The Charge Nurse of the Emergency Department under the direction of the Nursing Director and the Clinical Nurse Manager coordinates and assists with all levels of nursing care delivered to patients within the clinical setting. The Charge Nurse is responsible for the management and leadership of the Emergency Department during his/her respective shift. The Charge Nurse directs patient care/patient flow for the shift according to the nursing process and assures that the philosophy, mission, goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the department, medical center and Sisters of Mercy are implemented. The Charge Nurse is sensitive to the needs of patients, families, and fellow co-workers; plans and provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with age specific needs; plans and provides professional nursing care for patients in accordance with any identified cultural diversity needs (such as religions, lifestyles, beliefs, physical capabilities, and cultures); plans and provides professional nursing care for patients by assuring appropriate and effective pain management; assesses, reports, and assists patients that present with evidence of abuse and/or neglect; identifies problems and proposes solutions in own area. Communicates effectively with all members of the health team. Supervises: RN's, LPN's, and Techs NOTE: Orientation and training is age specific. Competent to provide nursing services to the age of the specific population of assigned areas. See Age Appropriate Care for Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric Patients policy. Current CPR Certification is a required element to maintain the job position.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate from an approved school of nursing
  • Licensure: Current Licensure by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years RN experience ER/acute care setting. Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Certifications: CPR for Healthcare Providers ACLS PALS TNCC
  • Other: Competent to provide nursing care to age specific patient populations of assigned area. To ensure patient safety, it is mandatory that all licensed personnel who provide direct patient care must pass a medication and math competency test before assuming medication administration responsibilities. This exam will cover knowledge of the actions and side effects of commonly used drugs along with math regarding correct dosages and IV problems. The passing grade on this exam is 90% and it may be repeated one time. Failure to pass the retake may result in termination of employment
